Hi ,
I am a new member of the forum and I live in Plymouth in The Uniited Kingdom. Not many Shrade's to be seen over here! I am interested in obtaining an Old Timer/Uncle Henry Stockman, but I would like a 4 inch (or more) model. All I seem to be able to find on ebay are the smaller versions. Did Shrade make a large Stockman? It seems that Shrades have a big following in the U.S.A, but not ever having seen one I do not know much about them, any help would be most welcome. How do shrades compare to other makers?

The Old Timer model 8OT is a large stockman. The closed length is 3-7/8" an the main blade is 3". A bit smaller than your prefered 4" length.

Depends on the brand (Schrade had many different brands of knives), the age, and the individual knife. Overall I consider Schrade average. Many of Schrade's knives are definitely sub-par, but most were priced accordingly. I'm a huge fan of their Old Timer series - decent price, good steel, durable, made in the USA, and consistantly good quality.

Unfortunately the retail supply of OldTimes has just about dried up; Schrade went out of business last Summer. But the Stockman and most of the other recent OldTimer models are common on eBay.

Stay clear of the 'new' OldTimers that are imported from China by Taylor Cutlery. The 'real' OldTimers will have stamps from Schrade, Schrade-Walden, or Ulster and all will say USA.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Welcome,

Here's a picture on my Schrade Stockman knives, the 3 7/8" model 885UH King Ranch is on the top right, it is the same size as the 8OT Senior.

I believe there must some of these still around, just keep looking.

There are other large Schrade Stockman models, some made over there in the UK, hang around and maybe someone will post pictures of those.

Keenedge, the biggest, baddest Schrade stockman was the 858OT. A whooping 4 5/8" long, so big it was sold with an optional sheath. Rare and expensive now. A very impressive knife.

Here's a thread where we discussed it. I don't think the photos are still up, if not one of our guys will probably post one. I can't, as I don't own one.

Make sure and read post number 3 in that thread, where member LT desribes an even larger (5 inch) stockman, which just so happened to be made in the UK.

Welcome to our forum! I sometimes visit britishblades.com, and they are a great bunch of guys.

Many thanks for the information, At least I now have some modelnames and numbers to work with!
Thanks Guys

Here are some OLD TIMER patterns, including the 858-OT along with an 80-OT, 98-OT, 34-OT, and 108-OT. They range in size (closed length) from 2-3/4 inch for the 108-OT to 4-5/8 inch for the 858-OT. Image qulaity is not the best but it at least offers a size comparison.

Thanks for posting the pic. The size of the 'LumberJack' really shows when compared to the smaller ones.
