Are the 4 1/2" trappers like the Remington and other too large to be practical. I know the blade length would be practical but pocket carry of a knife that big?

I find a full size trapper to be pretty large in my pocket. Maybe you'd prefer a sheath for carry. I do carry a full size Canal Street trapper sometimes but usually I go for a 3.5” pattern.

I carry a Tidioute 23 every day. I had the same question before I bought it, but it's definitely the one knife that I always have on me. I don't find it any less practical than carrying a cell phone in my pocket. I could see it being a problem if you wear tight pants or dress slacks that have smaller pockets. Most people seem to want a slim knife that "disappears in the pocket". I prefer to have a knife that I know is there. YMMV.

Double bladed trapper, Yes. Single blade, depends upon how you're built and where you carry it. If you are concerned, the Case Bose Back Pocket was designed to meet your desires. It's about as slim as you can be and still have a traditional build.

Thickness and handle profile do also matter...but in the end it's a very personal thing.
I know people who have been carrying 5" folders in their front pocket for decades with no hassle, while others consider a 3,5" slipjoint almost too big for pocket carry.
If I were you, I would pick a single bladed trapper of my choice and try carrying it for a while. It won't take long to answer your question, and if it doesn't work for you, you should be able to resell it here with a minimum loss (the price of learning something :))

FWIW, I've decided that knives with closed length 4 or more inches are too big for me to pocket carry. But I certainly respect Cory's opinion on many knife-related matters, and he's not bothered by the size.
As Cory says, YMMV.
As Fausto says, it is a very subjective thing.
As davek14 says in his sig, de gustibus non est disputandum.

Alot depends on what your typical attire is. I wear cargo/work pants (Carhartt or similar) all the time. They have big, deep, sturdy pockets. My 4.25" large Stockman is unnoticed in my RFP. Vic Farmer? No problem.

If I had to wear thin dress slacks I don't see that happening.

My Okapi is the biggest folder I have, and that is very comfortable to carry. I also have a Case Large Trapper, and a Northfield #54 Autumn Big Jack, both are very comfortable in the front pocket. These are my biggest folders, everything else varies in smaller sizes, all my knive are easy carry actually.
