BM 710 or 705?
Grip or mini-Grip?
large or small Sebenza?

While both models are always nearly identical in body, shape, and style; I always find myself buying the "large" version of any blade when there are 2 of the same model to chose from. I don't have exceptionally big hands, but for some reason I just seem to prefer a "bigger" blade when it comes to a folder.

I'm interested in some examples of "the little brother" folders which have have been bought over the larger model, and the reasoning behind it. Is it asthetics? Comfort? Sheeple-friendliness?

705 because iit had no recurve in the blade.

Minigrips are pocketable, the full size not so much. I own both but carry the RSK version more than the small. But the small has a place in my carry too.

i like bigger blades for the simple reason that the slice better. and i just. . .like them, and they look cooler when you flip them out really fast.

I have large and small Sebenzas and the MOD CQDs, and I've handled the Skirmishes and Griptilians a few times. In all of these, I would generally carry the large, but like the small in warm weather/light clothing, or for formal dress. I almost prefer the small Skirmish over the large, which has a very broad blade.

In all these knives, including the 710/705, even the smaller has a good-sized working blade. Sometimes, though, I do go with a much smaller knife, like the Mnandi or a small SAK -- as long as I know I have access to a more serious knife nearby! :D

I used to prefer smaller to midsized blades (2.5-3.5"). I felt that it was more important to simply have a very sharp knife of any size than to have a big knife, so I didn't bother with big knives. That all changed after I got a BM42 Bali-Song, Severtech, LCC, 710, etc. Now, I feel like I'm "undergunned" if I have a smaller knife. 3.5" blades seem only barely adequate, 3" knives feel tiny, and smaller ones feel useless. Which is bull, since having even a small sharp blade is infinately more useful than not having anything at all.

I think the only large/small combination I have is the 710HS/705-401. I would prefer that the 710 didn't have the recurve. I love the looks of the 705-401, but as a user, it's just a fraction too small in the grip, so it doesn't get used much outside of desktop fiddling or the occasional dress-knife use. I want to get a 710 and put custom silvertwill G10 scales on it.

Good question.

I myself had EDC'd a Schrade and a Old Timer combo for 20 years, now they have been replaced with a Benchmade 710 and a 705,(Also i EDC another POS for really crappy work.) the POS gets replaced by a 707 on weekends an hollidays.

Sidenote, had many knives prior to the edc combo's mentioned, but non were as worthy or deserving as them, i retired them when the last time i pulled the schrade to show a clerk at a local surplus, an he kind of was in shock over how good of shape they still were in,(and no longer made) got me to thinking about getting some new ones and here i am today, with more then i can use.

Now, to answer the question, i found over my life, there really are times when the big guns shouldn't be called into usage, due to the company kept or in, surroundings, or even if you feel a little, gun shy in front of others.
Many times i have had to defend my ownership and carrying of said knives over the years, had some good retorts an some bad ones, never lost either to confiscation or whereabouts out of my pocket which includes eyesight i might add.
Although, i tried to never let myself be browbeat over it, except maybe from ol' Johnny law when he knew he had no reason to take them but felt compelled to warn me of them, i simply got tired of going through the,.. OMG, He's got a knife!! thing anymore with some one in the background feeling smart or what have you, this also may include a weird sub conscous thingy, like when you have been heckled about having such a serious weapon on you during your mission to use it to cut something, Do you, Cut towards your body, or your buddy? Lol, maybe its just me, but take note in the future with it.

Final resolve in many of the situations where someone was nearby i felt would suddenly start vocalizing about my knife, i would use the Old Timer, then if someone beaked, i pulled out the schrade with an authoritve snap, instantly shutting them up quite a few times, with some others i just told them, i'd beat em with me fists if they wanted to meet god before sunday.

My bad, i gone long winded an all over the field, the long an short of it is..

I carry small an a large to resolve the different size thing with sheeple an for my needs, sometimes, a larger blade just needs to be used, an for others, something like a ladies finger blade is perfect.

Last note, i have really grown to love the slight recurve, I cAn CuT tHe kIdNaPpErS lEtTeRs OuT Of pApErS wItH tHaT(Kidding), can easily with the tips too, it just looks cooler this way, as i am faster an more accurate this way as it looks like it just being grazed by the edge, but being given enough to cleanly slice through.

And i am curious to hear others reasons, this could be interesting here at BF.

Peace

I think it's an interesting dynamic - and I wonder if there is a real difference in sales from manufacturers who make same models in big/small sizes. It can't be a cost thing as the difference in price between many big/small models for the purchaser is between $5-$20. Yet manufacturers still make many models in 2 sizes - so someone has to be buying them both!

It isn't like I shop specifically for big blades alone either (like the Cuda Max or the large Cold Steel Vaquero. 5" carry is the max legal size where I live, my longest EDC blade is just over 4"). In many cases we're talking of a difference of a ~1" longer handle and less than an inch of blade, with a few more ounces of weight - so I personally can't rationalize carry size as necessarily being a deciding factor.

I'd be interested in hearing from some of the people who have gone with the smaller size models (mini-Grip over the Grip, mini-Skirmish over the Skirmish, small M16/M21 over the larger models) just to see what sold them. Or does size really matter? ;) :D
