Hi guys,

Well as the title says, I'm looking for a larger blade to take with with on my outdoor trips.
When I say larger, I mean in the range of 8-10" or thereabouts.

I am primarily going to use it for chopping and other rather abusive tasks, so toughness is a prime concern for me.

To top it off, i am looking to spend around 100US$

I have been looking at the becker combat bowie, cold steels trailmaster and recon scout in sk5 steel (though I have heard that i need to reprofile them)

Since I live in Japan, I don't have a huge selection to choose from.

So any help, input or advise will be greatly appreciated !

Regards

I have a becker Bk7 which os extremely capable. If you can get your hands on any becker model get it. I chose the bk7 over the recon scout and i am happy its made in america instea of china and is much better quality then the recon scout
hope this helped

Maybe a two knife solution is best....

I have found that a Ontario 12" machete, paired with a good lock-blade folder, is a great combination.

BTW, just a word of warning...

Make sure that chopping is allowed in the area that you will be camping in.
I don't know about Japan, but there are lots of camping areas in the U.S.A. where it's illegal to hack up the vegetation.

I prefer the "leave no trace" policy whenever possible.

Here's my favorite:

Made with the same steel as their military knives.

Kershaw Outcast. Well designed handle, D2 tool steel. Give it a convex edge and it's a beast. Great price, too.
