I just received a new Issoire Sheppherd's knife from Fontenille Pataud. It is 4.5 total length, 3.5 blade and weighs 4.7 oz. At first I was nervous that it would be a "big carry" but I actually find that the bigger knife rides better in my pocket than a smaller one. Not as much flopping around. Anyone else find this to be true?

Greetings! I carry a Benchmade mentioned and pictured in another post, which is a pretty big knife. Sometimes if I'm not going about my normal routine I'll carry an Endura for fear of losing the Benchmade. Both relatively large but I'm 6'2" so it is all relative, I guess. I prefer the bigger knives. I have thought about a CRKT M16, though - still a decent size but a good value and easy to carry.

Pangris,
Aside from the pocket feel, I too like a bigger knife. It just seems more versatile. I use mine for food prep, as well as around the house chores, so a 2.5 inch blade really doesn't do it for me.

Greetings Ed, I agree the large blade does carry better. My current carry Varies from a Spyderco Police ss with G2 blade or SOG Pentagon Elite With 4" Blade. I just baught a CRKT M16-14 and look forward to carring it.
Some time ago i picked up a Camillus EDC and although the Blade was Scary sharp I could not get used to the smaller size.So the wife carries it when in limited clothing.
Lately I have been looking to go a bit larger. Perhaps 5.5". I am looking at a Camillus Mad Maxx. We shall see
Take care.

Doors,
A 5.5" blade, what kind of weight does that carry? I like idea of carrying the biggest functional blade I can feel comfortable with, but that seems big for the pocket? Maybe I need bigger pockets!

Ed,
I am not certain of the actual weight of the Maxx. The handle is anodized Titanium and blade is D2. A good friend of mine has one and it rides very nice, Better in the rear pocket than front, and does not seem to get in the way.

Sometimes I carry my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande (IWB), and that bad-boy has a 6 inch blade, with a closed length of 7 & 1/4, and over 13 inches when locked open.

Is my math screwed up or does this knife really have only one inch of grip? I have trouble picturing that...
