Larger SAK Executive?

I have carried a SAK Executive for several decades. It is carried in addition to a Leatherman multi tool. The Exec has just the tools I want: 2 blades, finger nail file/cleaner, scissors. I actually use the citrus fruit tool but could do without it.

The Exec is approx 3" closed. I would love a 4" Exec. The only 4" SAK that I find with the above listed tools have a bunch more tools than I want.

I suppose I could get one of those and take away the tools not wanted but it would be nice to buy one ready made.

I guess I am asking if anyone knows of such a knife. Or maybe I am just whining.

Please let me know if I somehow missed finding such a knife.

Sounds like you want a Climber with the opener layer removed. Or perhaps a Compact might suit you? It's not all that hard to take a 3 layer like the Climber and simply remove the opener layer. You need to drill out the pins slightly (or get a shop to do it for you if like me you don't have the tools) and then simply peen the pins for the new two layer Climber. You can use the corkscrew to clean your nails and there were (older) versions with a nail file instead of the hook if you can find one.

Climber is an option. Is that 3 layers? The nail file/cleaner is fairly important to me. The cork screw is ok, very handy for loosening knots in rope.

Mountaineer seems to be a Climber with a nail file added. I guess that is 4 layers? So 3 layers if the can & bottle openers are removed. The photos look like the awl is on the same layer as the openers. Could it replace the hook?

I have modded two SAKs so this mod should not be difficult.

Additional info is most encouraged.

To be frank, I've only ever done two myself and it was a beta/final version of the same concept. My third mod went badly wrong. I've still got all the bits but the tool shop ruined the liners so I'm screwed. I can do it again but first I need a more reliable machine shop first! What I love is how cheap these tools are for use with modding, it's really not too expensive if you screw up.

If Victorinox would finally come out with a cadet x you would have your setup. I'm looking for the same the same combination they don't seem to offer in the 84mm. Either a cadet x or larger executive.

Most photos of the Mountaineer shoes three tools on the back side: cork screw, hook & awl.

Smokey Mountain Knife Works has a photo that shows two more tools, appear to be slotted screw bits.

Does anyone know why the different photos?

Can I recommend spending some time with the sakwiki site? they should have all of this info in detail for you. I use them a lot when trying to check up stuff.

Thanks Pomsbz, will do.

I did ask SMKW but have not received a reply yet. Might take a while with current disruptions.

Ooops. Not sure how that happened.

Here is a concept I have been imagining. Please let me know if this is doable or not.

Start with a Mountaineer. Replace the can/bottle openers with the two knife blades from a donor. Serrate the long blade. Sharpen the short blade super sharp. The back side awl from the original opener layer is thinner than the knife so it would need a shim. It appears as if the back side spring is the same, just a little thicker for the knife.

The original knife blades are for general purpose use. The long serrated blade is for food. The super sharp short blade is saved for... any task needing a super sharp blade.

I have openers in my LM, and rarely need one.

Is this a straight forward mod?

Personally I find the Vic metal file, such as found on the Mountaineer, awkward on fingernails. Also, the stainless file is too aggressive, even on the nail nick side.

A straightforward no-mod combo:
- Serrated Spartan aka Weekender for small plain edge and large serrated blade. Very available on a big auction site. Just two layers. If your Leatherman's can opener is the lobster claw type, the Vic opener offers more utility.
- Classic on keyring. Covers nail file and scissors. Don't underestimate the 58mm scissors - they're highly capable.

Since you're OK with modding, you could remove the openers layer from a serrated Spartan to make a slim single layer knife. The corkscrew remains. Again, augment with a Classic on your keyring.

The Gourmet is an 84mm alternative to my suggested Spartan mod. It's discontinued, not as common, usually sells for more, and you'd have to serrate the large blade yourself.
