Hey all.

I just bought a 18" length of O1 steel and I am curious as to the largest practical portion of this which can be used to make one blade.

I've ground knives before, but the largest had a 5 inch blade. I am wondering whether using all the 18 inches for a vey large knife (short sword/machete type implement) is a practical idea, considering that in its current state (annealed), the steel is flexible.

I think the grinding of the blade won't be too much of a problem, so the main issue is whether the finished product will be practical for hacking shrubs/bushes without potential damage. How will heat treating affect the blade ? Will it make the blade more rigid and prone to snapping ?

The actual dimensions of the steel are 1/8" thick, 1 inch width and 18 inches in length. Thanks !

You shouldn't have any problems at all making an 18" long blade out of 1/8" stock Dan, as long as the heat treat is properly done.

1/8" would make a very aggressive cutter for a knife that size, but 1" width might give you trouble. You'll either have to leave the whole thing a little softer with more of a spring temper, or try to get a differential heat treat on it. Thats not a big deal, its just that 1" doesn't give you alot of room to make the transition. If your careful I'm sure you can do it.
