Larry Davidson just finished his first year as a knifemaker. He also just completed his first left-handed knife…my SE, which he has affectionately named “Lefty”

After checking out his Photopoint link in the Makers section, I contacted him. I was impressed with his open and honest communication. After we had decided on a model and materials he set out to build his first left-handed folder. Upon my request, he took pictures to document the creation of my knife.

Check Out My Davidson “Lefty” Page

The knife features 154CM blade, bead-blasted titanium bolsters, Desert Ironwood scales, and little VooDoo magic.

When I opened the Airborne Express package the first thing I found was an enclosure card. It contained a very nice, professional looking Certificate of Authenticity. Next, I realized the knife came in a very nice zippered pouch. Opening the zippered pouch, I found more than I had expected. What really sets it off is the contrast between gold anodizing on the jeweled flats and blue anodization in the filework. I then realized he heat colored all the screws to a nice bronze color. These added details really complete the knife as an “artistic” composition.

That VooDoo Magic
Larry is one of very few people licensed to use Larry Chew’s VooDoo Roller Bearing System. A few forumites have emailed me asking if the VooDoo system is really that good. Yes, it REALLY is that good! Many will agree that the Sebenza has an incredibly smooth action. I consider the Speedtech Synergy to have an even smoother and slicker action. The Chew VooDoo system Larry implemented is just unreal. It is SO SMOOTH and SO FAST that after playing with it for a little while my Sebenza felt sluggish. Playing with all three knives side-by-side, “Lefty” is the clear winner.

I don’t know how many posts I’ve read where someone thinks they’ve found the Holy Grail of knives, when in-fact they were just having that “new knife euphoria.” Larry has built a very impressive knife by anyone’s standards, but I would not be objective if I said this knife was perfect (if you want perfect I’ve been told you need to talk to Mr. Herman

) – it does have a few very minor bugs which I am sure Larry will resolve as his experience grows. This is one hell of a knife at a very reasonable price.

Crap! I didn't think I'd be buying a knife this year! Helluva review for a great looking knife.

Mitch:

This is a really good looking knife!

Did Larry change ironwood scales because the second set had more figure or because they were lighter in color?

Tom,
I can't really answer your question. Larry got a new billet of Desert Ironwood after he had completed my knife. He said he like the new billet better, so he made a new set of scales.

Perhaps Larry can chime in?

Tom and Mitch,
The first billet had a lot of figure and character when I opened it up....I picked what looked good and made scales up...I picked the best for the obverse scale and the less figured for the reverse scale....however, I'm making a "Lefty" right?
I realized Mitch would be looking at the knife held in his left hand and unfortunately
I followed "standard" right hand proceedures and placed the best wood obverse side out....and they were darker and muddy looking after sanding and buffing, so I fixed it....and everybody's happy....that's what it is about for me...btw, thank you, Mitch and all, for the kind words and the reception here on the Forum....Larry D.
I apologize for my web site, I jumped in and tried my hand at html and it is still rough, but I am trying to get a more organized site up..so I appreciate your patience...LD

Larry:

Thanks for the explanation.

I really have to think every time I make a left hand knife. It's easy to make a mistake if you're used to doing things the "other" way.

Great looking knife!
