We were drawn for the option to purchase Larry Fuegen's very nice handforged sole-authorship bowie and sheath at the pre-hammer-in dinner/show/sale sponsored by Josh & Jodi Smith at the L.A. Design Art Gallery in June of this year (2009). This was part of the annual Big Sky Country Bladesmithing Conference which includes, as separate events, the private Friday night event and an ABS sponsored weekend hammer-in. Have a look, details below.

Per Larry: "Blade is 7.5 inches. 5160 carbon steel with a handrubbed finish. Overall length is 12.25 inches. Handle is mammoth ivory with a fileworked steel handle frame and nickel silver liners. The guard is carved steel with an antiqued gray gunmetal finish. There is an engraved nickel silver (spacer) between the handle and guard. It has a tooled leather sheath with an ostrich leg (skin) overlay."

We were attracted by the excellent proportions of this bowie type knife, its understated elegance and of course, Larry's unique carving style. That was all before picking up the knife, which cinched it for me. Its heft, weight distribution/balance, feel in the (my) hand made it seem as if it the knife had been made for me by someone who knew me. While not the most eyegrabbing expression of Larry Fuegen's prodigious talent - it is for us a very satisfying addition to the collection.

Buddy,

That's an outstanding knife. Larry Fuegen does super quality work.

What an outstanding example of what a custom knife represents.

Everything about this piece is gorgeous in my opinion. And in spite of it's beauty and perfection, I would bet it will perform/cut along side most bowies out there.

And to think if Larry didn't make knives he could settle with being among the top sheathmakers in the world.

Such talent.

Very nice, but I'm pretty sure this is a fraud--no writhing, tortured gargoyles anywhere. If it were me I'd give it to your son for his graduation gift. He won't know the difference, and you can wait for the real thing.

Seriously, this is bowie ambrosia--ostentatious in a muted, classical way. If it were a violin, it's maker's name would start with an S.

Everything said about the knife is correct. (Ken you weave such a descriptive tale with one or two sentences--and they're spot on.) :)

I love the super clarity and layout, Buddy. Kudos to you.

Congrats on the fortunate draw. It's only luck if you didn't deserve it.... ;)

This a really elegant Bowie. Buddy, you finally have one of his fixed blades, so congrats on this very nice score.

This is another example of why I consider Larry Fuegen one of the VERY best craftsman making knives! Absolutely beautiful bowie in every way.

Considering the engraving and carving on the knife however, I think Mr. Fuegen should have done a bit of scratchin on the sheath button:D

Congratulations Buddy! Your pictures are always great.

Thanks,
Peter

Absolutely beautiful!!!

And check Larry Fuegen's tutorial to see just how much of his excellent work is done by hand and with the simplest of tools.

Man, that's a supreme example of why we call them Mastersmiths!!!

Congratulations.

Most of the superlatives have already been used and I'm no wordsmith.
Great piece, Buddy.
Congrats!
Super image also.
