Hello All,

My brother knows nothing about knives, but came into a Larry Newton folder by chance. He would like to sell it, but has no idea about price.

I will try to post some photos and would really appreciate some ballpark prices.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

You've been around long enough to know how imperfect assessing values are. The secondary market will dictate this. As always the best value in return are for makers who put out quality and have reknown and rarity.

I will vouch that Larry has the rarity and quality down pat. Every knife I have handled by him has impressed me in design and F&F. But, let's hope the notoriety will increase accordingly. Like so many other quality makers, he's just not on top of anyone's radar.

That knife won't dissatisfy anyone with it's build quality and materials. There is a stigma in utilizing Mokume (for whatever reason) that may penalize it over damascus, but it looks good.

What's it worth? Look at the dealer sites and searches. No feedback? That's a dilemma. I know it's a good one. He or you will have to step up to Gold status and find out with a post in the for sale area to know exactly.

IMHO I would "guesstimate" around $700, probably a little less. As Coop pointed out there is a "penalty" for Mokume (it scratches easily and tarnishes). Unfortunately, there is ANOTHER penalty for wood (shrinkage, scratching again). That "guesstimate" is based on a MINT knife. The photos aren't great, but it looks like there could be some condition issues, which would bring the saleable price down into the $450-500 range pretty quickly. As Coop said, the only way to find out would be to offer it for sale, either here or on eBay.
