Laser Engraving

So instead of a class ring, my father got me a class knife, an INFI SHSH II, and I've been looking on and off for almost a decade now for a laser engraving place I was happy with to actually Engrave Class of '99 on it.

I've figured out I'm probably going to have to grind the coating off or have someone do it for me beforehand.

Aside from that I'm not much farther along than I was when I first got my blade in '99.

I figure laser engraving is how the blade graphics are done on the Flame warden and it looks great!

So does anyone have experience laser engraving Busses? Does anyone already do it, or maybe want to try (expand your skillset Ban!)? Should I give up on the laser aspect and just get it engraved with normal tools? Any thoughts on the subject at all?

I figured out how to use photobucket and I want to post pics of my Class knife...but I really want to get it engraved first...so it's motivating me to get off of my posterior.

Thanks much,

Hmmmm...that's a good point Steelnut. I don't have one...I just saw pics, and the laser beam was how I would have done it. Anyone know?

I would think that the Busse custom shop would be the logical place to go.

They engrave through coating all the time. I don't know if they use lasers but that's my guess.

Good idea. They didn't do stuff like that back in '99, but I think they've upgraded the shop twice since then. Thanks Hog :) More input is still appreciated of course...any other ideas?

I'm still kind of hoping that Ban will post something like this:

"Never fear Hogcitizen! Ban Man is here! Ship that sucker to me, my laser engraver was delivered several months ago and the results look great!"

ROTFL!!!!! I was just thinkin that 'Nut!

Be sure them sharks have Fricken brand laser beams tho. If it's not a Fricken beam it's a fricken beam.

Ban doesn't have a laser engraver.

He is considering getting an etching system but I don't know if that would etch through a coating.

If I sent it to Ban I'd have him Ban it before he engraved it...I'm not going to be using it anyway, and it'd seem kind of wrong to send him something and not have it come back shiny.

I think that would look sharp. Then I could get a display case for it, so peeps wouldn't cut themselves, and it would be an awesome way to trick people into letting me rant about INFI and Busses.

Will a normal engraver do okay with INFI? I've always been afraid to just let some random place do the job...worried about them ruining the knife, and/or their engraving system. Honestly, the laser part of the engraving just got tacked on there because I like lasers, and I know there is engraving done with them.

I don't see why not, but there is always the chance that the operator will screw up.

If you send it to Busse, you know they will do it right. If you go to a trophy shop or something, they will freak if you need a ~$1,500 replacement knife.

I had one done at a local gun show .Contact jon@anvilarms.com maybe he can help

I give the young Man a Classy Class knife, he then proceeds to beat the everliving snot out if it, hangs on to it for nine long years.

And now He wants to get it Laser engraved, made shiny, wants to put it into a presentation case and to just Talk about it? maybe pull it out once in a while and Rub it with a Cloth Baby Butt cover?

What is a Daddy to do?

This is the same young man the smooth killed a 24" diameter trunked shade tree that used to live in our back yard by throwing that knife(along with assorted other knives, hatchets, axes and even singlejacks and sledge hammers) at it?

I remember when he thought if He broke a Basic #3 in a crack in a slab, we could sharpen the stub and it would be legal to take to school(that sort of resulted in a hole where the crack used to be and a slightly bent #3)

We fixed that by getting the first Police Recruit Variant ever made.

And now He wants to Put His very first Busse on display?

I do not know just what to think.

Edit:: BubbaThud here...I forgot the wife was just posting...my bad.

The 15 lb. sledge is what really killed the tree....I had no idea just how destructive it could be...it was hard to throw too...took me two tries just to hit the tree.

My advice is to call the janitor late at night.

I know its old news now, but as for the flame warden heres how its done. :)

The satin finished knife is masked off in a flame pattern and the whole thing is blasted twice. First with a coarse media then with a fine media (the fine could be either glass bead or ceramic) The final blast close's the pores in the steel effectively making for a nice smooth finish. When the masking is removed you get a dual finish! Same thing with the Ice finishes as well. The possibilities are endless. I've seen stencils for the window and mirror frosting business so its possible to make them, I just wonder if someone makes them small enough for a knife. I've seen those machines that look like printers that cut decals, it could work for that masking stuff I suppose.

There might be a cottage business hiding there somewhere! :D
