I gots me a tricky shape that I'm too lazy to bandsaw...a fixed blade with tricky shapes, so not quite as accurate as folder blades but still I'd like some detail and cleanish edges on the profile...what would you suggest, thanks...
(for a run of 10+, which might level the costs out)

well ferret, which ever is lest exspensive down under. i have the blanks pofiled by laser for my rhino chop and paring knives done at admiral steel. since the have the steel and can cut it . keeps down on shipping costs. i just oversize the piece about a 1/16 to make sure i can grind off any steel that may have been over heated

Ferret,

I talked with these guys at last years Blade Show. They do great work (judging by the samples they had). I haven't worked with them though.

Thanks Gents...
What I'm really trying to find out is whether water is better than laser...for a city where I can't get good steel there's a ridiculously large number of places to cut it, by loads of different wizz-bang methods...am guessing plasma is the roughneck cousin of these other 2 methods.

In that case, if it were my blade steel, I would prefer water. But, if there were no alternatives, laser or plasma would work. Like some one else said, just have the pattern cut a little oversize, and grind down, to eliminate any possible stress risers.

Water cutting is the best, no heated steel and edges left just like they were ground with 80 or 100 grit. The grain used in cutting doesn't seem to leave any deep scratches like a belt.

Around here they prefer you supply steel in a sheet, instead of strip like usually bought for grinding.

Cost here is $3.00-$5.00 per blank, depending on size, the bigger taking a little more time. Accurate to .005".

Barry, CLI does very clean laser work, the only better I seen wont cut my blades anymore due to huge Boeing contracts! Check out Chuck Bybees site, he has some watercutter info there. I think it is www.alphaknifesupply.com
