Laser makers' mark

A friend of mine has a shop that does a lot of engraving on wood, and we've done a few trial makers' marks on blade steel that look great.
Is there any disadvantage to doing it this way? Most people prefer etching, and I wonder if that's because they don't have a laser practically next door.

I hope this topic hasn't been beat to death- a search didn't turn up much of anything.

Thanks for any feedback!

Laser makes a very crisp makers mark - no drawbacks that I am aware of. I have used lasers to mark my blades in the past. Now I stamp my maker's mark because its simple and old skool. A stamp leaves a lasting impression (pun intended).
