I've never used a laser sight for a gun, but I've seen a lot of laser sighting options for handguns. Are they available for long guns\long range also? I know that they are used for rangefinding but have no idea if they are used on sniper rifles or long range hunting rifles where you have to deal with trajectory and windage.

And if so, how do they deal with bullet trajectory? I'd like a gun that shot as flat as a laser, but don't think they're out there.

Basically, you'd have to zero it for a set distance, and all others be damned. I suppose you could work out some sort of "dial-a-range" system, but I doubt it would be worth the effort.

Also, you'd have to have a laser with exceptionally low divergence; that nice tight spot you see on the wall across the room might blow out to the size of a basketball at longer ranges.

I'm sure it can be done, but I can't think of a situation where it should be done.

You only ever see them on rifles in movies so the hero doesn't get killed
Lasers are really only for quick acquisition when you're firing without your sights, NOT as a hole punch. And if you're not using your sights, you might not have time to find that little red dot on someones chest.

Range finders are nice if you haven't the time for knowledge to do it your self, but you still need to know your ammo characteristics to calculate trajectory or just find one of these for your ammo and zero and burn it into your brain

I could only see it as being useful for a home defense gun. Chances are that you'll be high on adrenaline and won't be able to use your iron sights effectively (training would help with this). A nice red dot on the bad guy that you could see in low light conditions would be pretty handy.

Any other situation (longer distance, outdoor environment, daylight) and the laser is pretty useless.

Red dot sights, on the other hand, are very useful in most situations except for long range (200 yards+) precision shooting.

i have tried 'em on pistols and didnt really like 'em, they are "ok" but i just didnt see a big improvement, maybe with more practice i wouldnt be so hard to find the dot lol?
