When I asked Randall why they use Duralumin instead of brass
as the standard butt cap on the #1, they said it was for ballance.
Does anyone own both? Can you really feel the brass cap opposed to
the Duralumin?
Was planning on all sorts of cool options, now I just want the standard #1-7 with maybe a brass cap. :)

Yes, you'll feel the weight of the brass end cap, it'll shift the center of balance towards the rear a little.

Only you can decide if you want your knife to be blade heavy, neutral, or light...that's solely a personal preference issue.

I prefer that gravity does some of the work for me, i.e. 'blade heavy'

YMMV

Get yourself a piece of that .999% silver and send it to RMK to use for the fittings....now we're talking heavy...:D

Thanks Melvin,
so Duralumin makes it neutral? Or a bit blade heavy?
I prefer the balance to be centered (neutral)
Brass or Duralumin cap?

Well, to properly answer your question...
so Duralumin makes it neutral? Or a bit blade heavy?

It's really the handle length/drop, and the blade length, thickness, and grind that determines whether the knife seems blade heavy or not...not so much the end cap material...

But, all things being equal, the brass end cap will shift the center of balance back a little bit...not much, but yes, it is noticeable...

So, if you had a RMK model that you liked, yet wished it was a little more/less blade heavy, you could make a gross adjustment by varying the blade length. Or, if that's not an option on that particular model, if you're happy with the blade length, or you just want to make a fine balance adjustment...then, end cap material comes into play.

We've been talking about a standard RMK model #1-7 IIRC, which is already pretty much blade neutral IMHO, so a brass end cap is going to make that particular model 'blade light/handle heavy'...to me at least.

What it really boils down to is your own personal preference MCM. I'd suggest that you handle as many RMK's as you can, and once you decide on a model, handle as many versions of that model as you can.

Only you can decide what feels best for you...

Hope that helps,

Mel

Well, getting closer to it being made.
Anyone ever change their mind on options with only a year left to go?
Do they care? Went for a standard #1 in 7" Carbon. Only option
is the Commando grip. Still happy with my choice, but some commando grips look pregnant compared to the early Commando gripped models.
Thoughts?

Hey MCM, welcome back, glad to hear that you're getting closer to your RMK delivery date...

As far as changes go, we've never changesd an order through a shop ordered knife, but we've made changes to orders placed thru RMK dealers with about a month to go, on 3 occasions with no complaints noted...

You may want to nail down just what you want, then notify the shop of the changes you'd like, if any...

I'd sure like to hear what Rhett has to say about this question, cuz it sure is a good one!

Mel

MCM,

You are always safer asking the Randall shop your questions of this nature, as they are the ones that have the control. Conditions today might change a decision that may have been different in the past. Also they have hard and set rules about certain things which are only known to them.

I would add, the best way to eliminate problems with an order is, to stick with what the Randall catalog offers.

Regards,

Rhett Stidham

Thanks for the info.
Will stick to my orig. order.
:)
This will be my 1st Randall!
Have purchased 14 MT folders since I posted this back in 3/03, but no fixed blades.
Am really looking forward to next yr.! Was planning to use this one
when I put the order in, now I think it will probably just end a safe queen.
What a waste.
Thanks again!
BTW, if Randall is listening, I think they should offer a Retro #1 "special run" to us forum members! Built just like the Originals! The differences are subtle, but substantial!
Anyone care to get behind me in line?
