I got the Canoe out today, but I think it may be the last day for me until Spring break up.
There was a lot of frost this morning, and as I pulled up to the water at Guernsey reservoir I could see the ice sheets holding out in the shaded areas. Hard to see in this shot, but there is 1/8-1/4" ice here:
I had to break a channel through the 1/4" ice to get out to clear water. Slow going, but worth while; beautiful and still morning. The cold weather meant I had the reservoir to myself, not another soul seen all day.
This is a man-made reservoir and it's fun to paddle under these looming cliffs. Obviously the water is down this time of year.
I stopped to for a lunch break and found a little tinder for a fire. I'm not sure what this plant is, maybe a cone flower or thistle?
Regardless, a quick strike with the ferro rod got a little twig fire going for tea.
Beautiful day for a day-trip in the canoe, but the ice is coming and I doubt I'll have another chance to get out 'til spring since the ice is forming up quickly now. There is always something special for me about the last canoe trip of the season, it marks the changing of the seasons.
Had to take knives of course: Laconico "Short & Stout" and a Livesay necker. The Laconico makes a perfect knife for general duty and just foolin' around. When I'm in a canoe or kayak, I always wear a neck knife in case of a spill.
Happy trails!
