I am about to pull the trigger on the Busse Hell Razor. I am thinking of getting the desert shadow finish. I've never held any Busse knife before. I got some good advice in the Busse forum regarding getting a magnum grip (my hands are 8.25" wrist to tip of my middle finger). Any last recommendations from the knowledgeable users here? Warnings?

Also, despite my reading the info on the website, I still am not 100% sure of the practical differences between "paper micarta" and "linen micarta". I don't think I ever held either. Any helpful comments?

It is by far the biggest amount I have ever spent on a knife, so I have teeny trepidations, but the beauty of it calls to me. I hope that this knife will serve me for the rest of my knife, even though I do not intend to baby it - I want it to be a user.

I'm very close to getting one of these too. The only thing holding me back is I want a 1/4 inch thick piece of INFI. I'm holding out 'till they come out with a Fatty Hell Razor. Does anyone know if there's a chance for a Fatty?

Paper is smoother and slightly less durable than the other micartas, canvas is tougher, and Linen is right in the middle, AFAIK. but they are all very strong- it is mostly a matter of looks, but the smoother micarta is less "grippy".

Good choice for a purchase. I was tempted, but I have a SJTac which is pretty close to that size blade, and I am holding out for a FBM.

Oops, didn't mean to hijack the thread. I'll start another post.
I don't mind the "hijack" at all. It is absolutely to the point. I wasn't aware of the thickness differences in Busse knives and would like to know the answer to this question myself as I plan on holding on to the knife for the rest of eternity, or longer if possible. ;)

It's my understanding that Infi is so tough that it is the only blade steel permitted in heaven. I don't know what they allow in Hell. ;)

Rostfrie?

I can’t imagine that there will be a ¼” thick Hell Razor. The point of the corrugated Bevel on a 3/16” blade is to get the ultimate combination of strength and weight saving for what is, principally, a combat utility knife.

The tan coating is very tough, so the desert shadow should be equally robust (tan is its base color).

All micarta is very tough, and it really is just a question of degrees. If you’re going magnum slabs then your options are canvas, and canvas is the toughest option.

Is it very abrasive to the hand?

Does anyone know what the circumference of the magnum handle is compared to the standard one?

I suppose many of the people who visit the Busse site already know those things (I suppose there must be many collectors of those knives), but for someone who has never handled one, it's hard to tell from the photo of the slab alone.

Buy one. If it turns out to not be to your liking, post it for sale in unused condition at the price you paid Busse for it, and it will sell within hours.

The magum handles are not humongous or club-like. They simply have more pronounced palm swells and contours than the standard. I really like them.
On the blade stock thickness of the Hell Razor, I would not even call them large-feeling. They even work well on 5/16" stock, without feeling clubby.

It's just me, but on a Busse I intended to use, as opposed to just fondle and admire, I would not consider anything other than the canvas micarta. The other materials are also extremely durable, but if I'm going to buy the toughest possible knife then I want the toughest available handle material, as well.

As for the thickness of the HR, don't worry. You are not going to break it. If you do, the iron-clad Busse warranty is in effect. But you won't.

I personally would love to own one!! Get it, if you do not like it, for whatever reason, you will have no trouble getting rid of it!!

BTW, get the Magnum grips. Canvas is the toughest, and, if you are going to keep it forever, it's much easier to thin down a fat grip to suit your hand than trying to build up a skinnier one.

I like the fat grips. Like was said, they aren't a club and a little bit of sandpaper to any high spots will make it a custom fit for you. All good.

You aren't going to break 3/16" INFI. If you happen to manage that, 2 things will happen. 1, a new knife from Busse and 2, one hell of a discussion right here.

You really can't go wrong.

The canvas micarta slabs are not abrasive: the canvas is just nice and grippy, and even grippier when wet.

As Mike said, the magnum slabs are highly contoured rather than fat. I have medium sized hands, and my Uncle has large hands, and we both find magnum slabs to be comfortable.
