Last minute knife gift from evil walmart

I want to get my 16 year old son his first clip-it type folder from the evil walmart.

Thinking about a native as I purchased a walmart native and have been pleased with it.

However, he may (or may not) like something other than what Dad has. Any other folders at walmart I should consider for his first knife of this type?

Thanks
Wayne

A chive or leek might be a good idea is something inan assisted opener interests you. Or you could take a look at the Buck Mantis or Kershaw Storm II. The main negative i see with alot of Walmarts knife selection id the prevalence of combo edges. I have come to dislike them quite alot as depending on the serration type can be at best difficult and at worst impossible to sharpen. You could also take a look at a swiss army knife.

How big of a deal is the clip? If my dad was buying a knife for me from Wal Mart's selection, it would HAVE to be either:

A Swiss Army Knife (but you want a single bladed folder)
One of the Spyderco knives that they apparently now have.
OR
A Buck 112 (the 110 is nice, but a little on the large side).

I wouldn't personally care too much for a Kershaw, as they don't appeal much to me (though I must admit to never having handled one, so I could be wrong).

Past Victorinox/Wenger, Spyderco, Buck, and Kershaw, I don't think there are any other safe bets. The Gerber knives and other junk they sell isn't worth sales tax.

He has a couple of small swiss army knifes now, as well as a swiss multi tool. That's kind of why I was leaning toward a clip-it folder for something different.

Benchmade 551. Its not too big, not too expensive, but a very nice knife. Oh yeah and a Red Ryder BB gun.

I've been carrying one for about a month and I can't stop looking at it. If Michaelangelo made knives they would not have been this beautiful or functional. Thank you Tom Mayo and Buck.

Simply elegant framelock. 440C blade steel. Stainless handles. Strong clip, tip down carry. Smooth yet not slippery to the touch. Potently sharp out of the box. 7.25 inches overall.

You will spoil him for sure with this one.

Found it for about $30 in a clamshell on a hook with other knives. I have only seen this once, at a Super Center, so call ahead to see if it is carried by your local WM. Otherwise, it is about the same price online, per Froogle.

Best,

There's still time to get something nice online and have it shipped to your house.

A Spyderco Delica or one of the Salts would be great.
Benchmade Red line knives are pretty decent, too.
Shoot, get him a BM 707. Can't possibly go wrong with that... it's a real knife.

If you've got time to ask us questions, and not just run out to the store and grab the first thing you see, then you've got time or shop a little and find something good.

Good luck!

Peace.

If WalMart is SO EVIL....why do you so hypocritically support it?

Ditto this one, or check out the Buck MANTIS or PILOT, I got one of those for my Nephew for XMASS.

I was really impressed with the quality.

Get him the S30V Native. Even though it duplicates yours, that is one handy little blade!

Wally sells a model of the CRKT M16, however that may be too tactical for what you are looking for. The Kershaw Leek or Chive would both be good alternatives.

i have recently purchased a kershaw 1640 vapor(plain edge)from wally world. nonassisted opening. it is clip carry point down. about $19.00. it won't win
any awards but it carries well. only problem i have with it is the thumb stud is a little ruff but a little filing will fix that.just a suggestion to check out.

The Buck

Cutback
Hilo
Mantis
Pilot

As well as the 730 series slipjoints.

Are all made in China, 440C blades and fit and finish are tops!

+1 on this. I love my native, great steel, great blade shape, and the best part is if it gets trashed, it's not super expensive to replace.

I think hes saying evil sarcastically (ok, maybe not the right word)
Ah yup, smart alec sarcasm folks, given the uproar about walmart on the forum lately. Obviously I don't really have a problem with walmart else I wouldn't go there.

Are the leek and chive plain edge?

The Kershaw Leek, I snapped up in a heartbeat at WM for $30 w/o box & loose clip, was plain edged. Didn't see any Chives (but then it is kind of a small visual target in the midst of all that stuff at WM - knives all over the place).

Was supposed to be a gift for, a member of the most aggressive fighting force I've ever known (wife's parents), father-in-law. However, my younger son attached himself to it at first sight.

Be that as it may, I have drawn plans to trundle it down to the Kershaw factory, just down the street in this neck of the woods, and ask them to exchange it for a Random Leek (tanto CPMS30V DLC) along with $30. I've got to get it away from him first...he has to sleep sometime.

Slightly embarrassed to take the Leek back to Kershaw as I already had them reverse the clip, to tip-up, which they gladly did, lickity split, for nada. A shallow but effective excuse to stare and ponder at the many many award winning objects of desire in the various glass cases in the waiting area up front. Is there any award Ken Onion doesn't have?

Best,

I know the Chive is plain edge (got mine from there). I'm going by memory when I say that the Leek is partially serrated.
