Last name of designer of Gerber "Paul Knife?"

Poehlmann.
I am not sure if he is still making knifes now though.

Is a Gerber "Paul Knife" a custom? What makes this knife unique? I've seen some for sale and wondered if they are worth the asking price. I'd like to purchase a small vintage folder for my collection; is this knife collectable? Thanks

Gerber Paul factory knives are collectable. The designer, Paul Poehlmann, also made some custom knives which are fairly expensive.

They were made in the by Gerber and designed by Paul. So it was an earlier version of a collaboration between a maker and a factory.

Mr. Poehlmann is an engineer who made knives. Mostly folders from what I understand. He used the "Paul" mechanism in some of his custom folders and every once in a while one will show up on the market. Now if I could just dig up the Knife World article in my 10 year files. I am commuting from Chattanooga for a couple of days so it will take me a while.

I'll email you with my thoughts on the factory models and their current prices. :)(especially this week:))

Added later.
The "Paul" mechanism is pretty cool (especially for it's time). There is a large button over the over the front bolster that was used (pressed on both sides) to unlock the knife in the open or closed position. With a little practice it could be used with one hand.

Just got a note from A.G. (we have struck up a friendship and I think he did not want to embarrass me) :D Thanks A.G.

The knife was designed by Paul, manufactured by a high-tech defense contractor and marketed by Gerber.

Enough factory talk. (Before I am banned :)) I had to correct my misinformation in the above post.

I will try to dig up the article and email you.

No need to be embarrassed Gus. I started this thread trying to find a custom knife maker. The topic drifted ever so slightly. So what? We have far too many self-appointed Forum Police here. It's getting old real quick.
