Well Im not sure how many of you may have noticed, but towards the end of production the knives being turned out, many of them, have horrible quality control. Ive been buying some that I find, but the quailty many of them is awful. Uneven liners, uneven grind lines, pitted blades and backsprings, handles with really deep nicks and pieces missing. Its really sad that the last ones being produced had some real quality issues. The only ones I found that were still somewhat consistent were the Schrade-Walden cigar classics.

They (Schrade) have always been working knives, but I do not remember a time when the quality was ever this bad. :(

When I found out that they were going out of buisness, I decided I'd go ahead and get myself and my son's a matching set (something to remember Dad by when they've grown up). These have always been my favorite brands and I have more of them in my small "box-o-knives" than any other.

The first one I looked at was an X-Timer folding knife (don't remember the model, but looks like the XT2B when open). It's described on the card at Wal-Mart as a "one hand opening" knife. When I opened it, it didn't lock. When I tried again, I realized that the thin "lock bar" that slides behind the blade was a fraction of a mm too long and couldn't snap behind the blade to lock it open. I finally managed to lock it with a second hand. It might wear enough over time, but is that a piece that I want to wear down?

I still plan to get a set (probably Uncle Henry's or Old Timers), but I'll definately be checking them closely before paying for them. The cause of it's demise is becoming clearer :(

I just bought a 3OT, an 7OT, and a Silhoette SO432 from my local Walmart. all were excellent, and each was THE LAST ONE in stock. I think they have only 2 or 3 more Schrades of any type, and this was last week...may all be gone by now. I'm sorry that I waited till Schrade was gone to buy these knives, I think Ill just put them away for a few years.

I have an IXL bone handle hallmarked Scheffield knife that I bought over 20 years ago, and I have retired that one, too. I have been carrying a Schrade
(or Imperial) pocket knife for over 45 years.
I now carry a Gerber I bought to replace the Schrade IXL I carried.
Turns out the Gerber was made in China.
