Started working on this hawk Sunday and I've been going like a madman trying to get it finished. I just need to put a couple coats of sealer on it but its done other than that. I've been wanting to try a spike like this for sometime now and wasn't sure if I could pull it off but I did. It will open a beer in a blink of an eye. The head is 8", 3" cutting edge, and the spike is 2 1/2" from the back of the eye. The haft is 19" with a wrought iron doda.

getting use to seeing great work from ya, but that spike is extra nice
as much quailty work as you put out, how much time do you spend at it
a week? bb

Nice one, Ray!
How do you shape your hafts? Drawknife?
I've still got those two heads sitting in front of me every day, wanting to me finished.
Have a great time at Blade.

Great piece Ray but you do have time to get another done for Blade you know :D ;) I do look forward to looking at your stuff there.

bb, I'm a full time maker. Retired as a carpenter mainly because I was sick of it but wanted to devote all of my time doing what I love doing. On the average I must spend 10 to 12 hours almost everyday making. My body is addicted to iron.

Howie, on the mini hawk handles I'll cut as close as I can with the bandsaw and do the rest of the shapeing with the belt grinder. On the full size hafts I can get them premade. Theres still a good deal of fitting that needs to be done but it does save a good amount of time.

Don, Most likely I'll start getting ready for the show as soon as they open the building up Friday morning. I'll be at 13-D in the Handmade section.

Another fine piece, Ray! We know you figure ho hum with your work by now, but we sure enjoy seeing your work.

No ho hum here. It would be ho hum if I made the samething day in and day out. Except for maybe trying to reproduce a small number of pieces everything is somewhat different. Like with this last hawk it has given me even more ideas to try. I totally love what I'm doing, just wish I would have got into it when I was a young man and I still don't think it would have gotten ho hum.

Awsome Ray, I love the arrow head type end, and realy like the extra wide poll, that baby won't come loose even under extream use.
