I know this probablly isint new information to most of you but I thought I would share anyway. I saw in what I believe was " field and stream" ? an idea for an emergency last resort fire steel. Its nothing more than a replacement tip for a striker for a torch. You can ususlly get a pack of 5 for around $2 or $3 bucks. These arent exactally easy to use but it does produce a good spark if you do it right. And sometimes I find myself trying to get by with nothing more than my regular knife and a sak so its better than nothing. you just need a small key ring for it. anybody else carry one of these? - Joel

how does it work?
it seems to small to strike

You'd actually be suprised I know its short but running a knife down it a few times it will throw some really suprising sparks. Its no fire steel but for its size you get some good spark! You've got to kind of get the coating off first then the next few hard strikes really throw- Joel

On a similar note I've used discarded BIC lighters I've found in the woods to start a fire by removing their flint and using them like a firesteel.

Nice thread. I have a couple of the teeny firesteels that are pretty darn effective, you just have to take care not to snap them in two while striking. What I like about your set up is the little cap and split ring. Do they come with that or was this something you added on. Thats the part I really like!

The little aluminum cap comes attached to the fire steel and I tried pretty hard on one to shake it loose and they are in there pretty darn good. The split ring came off a little victorinox gentlemen ( the mini sak with a blade and scissors). works pretty good all you have to do is drill a small hole in the aluminum cap. and you can reuse the split ring when the steel wears out! :D
and these were a generic brand replacement tip Im sure there is some out there that are even better- Joel

You can pick up the striker replacement flints at any hardware store or farm type of store that sells welding supplies, or torch supplies. I got these at big R. and farm and fleet.

Oh, heck, now I feel really stupid. It just occurred to me that I've actually bought those before.

I'll go stand in the corner now, and keep my mouth shut.

LOL- Thats nothing Im usually the one asking really dumb questions and I spend most of my time in the corner, - Joel
