Last week was a very good week for me, but bad for my budget. Monday I hauled some hurricane supplies to the Battered Women's Shelter here in town (Karmic foreshadowing) and stopped at a pawnshop that I like. They had a very good condition, looked like it had never been fired, with box and papers, S&W642-1 Airwieght for $269! I talked to the woman behind the counter a while (an aquantaince of mine) and she let me have it for $229 plus tax!!

Thursday I was driving back from a couple meetings in North Louisiana and stopped at a nice gunshop in the middle of nowhere. Turns out that they had just bought S&W collection from a fellow a couple weeks back. I agonized in the store for about 30 minutes, then started haggling. I ended up with an 'used' but unfired in the box S&W 940 with box, papers, factory cleaning kit and moon clips and a used but very solid S&W Model 12 Airwieght, 4 inch skinny barrel, round butt, with incorrect S&W round butt service grips (they are standard K-frame grips and thus gap a little at the top). I put the pair on lay-a-way for $600 plus tax! $275 for the Mdl 12 and $325 for the Mdl 940. I am dying to sell something big off and just run back up there and grab them.

So much for building an AR carbine or buying a HK91/G-3/Cetme!! :D

Next, get a good .223 semi-auto if you don't have one. I have a Ruger Ranch Carbine & it's a sweetheart. Bought our son a Bushmaster 3 years ago & my $500 cheaper rifle is better by far .

If you intend to carry this one, rather than keep it as a collector piece, be aware that there were some problems with this model and certain types of ammo. It had something to do with cylinder binding caused by particular cases or primers. Sorry I can't recall the exact details, but I remember a lot of discussion about it in the mid-1990s. If you haven't already done so, it would be worth doing some research before relying on the gun for self-defense.

sounds like y'all are just givin 'em away down thar. If this is still goin on, sounds like a trip to the bayou could be in order.....

great score!!

I, as well as a few other people I knew, had 940s back when they were available. The only problem I ever saw with them was with Cor-Bon ammo. The case expansion was such that after firing five rounds in the moon clip, it was hell to get it out of the cylinder. Granted, Cor-Bon is hot, but I also fired Federal +P+ and there was no trouble at all. One other thing that I found was that if the chambers were a little dirty (such as after firing a round or two from each), I could load individual 9mm rounds and fire them without using the clips. Of course, reloading after this would be a problem, but if it was a last ditch deal, you could load individual rounds from a mag for your main pistol (assuming that both were 9mm of course).

I loved the 940 concept, but it was a heavy pistol for it's size. If they made an Airweight or Scandium version, I would buy one in a heartbeat. Unfortunately they got eclipsed by small 9mm and .40 autos.

So, just how DID you get the price down at Pelican Pawn?....I seem to remember this "acquaintance" was an attractive, older, MILFish Blond...:D

I'm just sayin'

This? This! You gotta start off with your very first post by 'casting asparagus' (in the immortal words of Kinky Friendman) at my bargaining and persuasiveness?!?!?!

Fine, see if I let you shoot it when Thom and I come up to see you. :p

It is killing me trying to figure out how to afford to go get the 940 and 12 off of layaway, and then how to afford the other two that I am going to put on layaway if they are still there!!!

I just got back from making the 310 mile round trip drive to pick up two that I have been wanting for a long long time. I had them paid down several months back, but just couldn't get away to go pick them up.

The first, a S&W 12 Airweight, blued, about 85% finish, 4 inch with a round butt frame. The grips are incorrect, and thus have a bit of a gap at the top. Most of the finish is still bright and shiny, but has some holster wear at the muzzle and on the edges of the cylinder. Also a touch of wear on the bottom front edge of the frame and the trigger guard, and some minor bolt drag marks. Must have been worked over by someone who knew what they were doing because the trigger is very nice. I have a feeling this one will get carried a lot.

The second, an unfired S&W 940, in correct box, with S&W brown with blue markings wax paper, 10 factory moon clips, factory cleaning rod and swab, and warranty sheet, shooting tips booklet and manual. Super clean. I still can't make up my mind if I want to shoot it or sit on it a bit.
