OK, I finally got around to posting some pics into my file. I also have a few minutes to get this posted here.
Last Sat morning Lieninkugel (Wes) and I went into North Central MA for an overnighter. We headed into the woods around 11am, the trail was awesome...I had never been to this area before, it was some seriously awesome terrain, very rocky and ICY...more than once we both almost took a header onto the icy trail..

All around where large boulders slicing out of the snow and Ice...WE started the trail at around 400 ft above sea level, according to the topos online. We steadily climbed, being careful to pace ourselves, and not sweat to much. The midday temp was 20 degrees F.

We quickly cut off the trail, and headed up towards what looked like an interesting area. It was, basically long cuts of the rocky terrain sticking up out of the snow like a big whales back...only hundreds of feet long, as if many of them swam side by side, at about 40 foot intervals. The rocks differed in height, some were high enough that you wouldnt risk climbing them with all the ice.
On the way up, we found a really nice ICE wall....it was impressive!

The day started out with no wind, and cold. We planned on using tarps and natural terrain to break any wind, and reflect a fire.
After finding a huge boulder, between some highrocks, and hemlocks, we settled in. The choice to setup were we did was made easier by the discovery of a large downed birch, that looked pretty good as source of fuel for the night.

Set up went well, and kept us warm enough.
Chopping and sawing let us test some new tools. I got to really abuse my new Walt Davis PBR! Man, what Chopper! Perhaps the best I have ever owned in this style!!!

Wes got to try out his new Rosseli Axe and Grandpa Knife. I also brought along my Rosseli hunter and GB Scandi forest axe. All tools performed VERY well.

more later...got to feed the baby!

Well, I never claimed to be a rocket scientist! I did go up there with no sleeping bag again.....(this wont ever happen agian..LOL, I just bought a nice HEAVY bag that should keep me plenty warm.)
That wasnt what did me in, I finished setting up, and OVER layered! Layering clothes is kinda a science IMO...and I screwed up. I had on a layer of summer underarmor, and then some polypros...basically, I was sweating, and couldnt feel that I was...I felt cool, due to the underarmor...and once I set in for the night, the sweat on my chest started to freeze. I drifted off to sleep, and awoke with the worst feeling, my chest and core was COLD..now, I have asma...this isnt good.
I believe that all the layers, with the heat reflecting at me from the fire, caused the situation...and then once the fire died down, while I slept, add wind to the math....not a good deal at all. The temp, away from the fire, just before I drifted into sleep was around 6-7 degrees F. add 30 MPH wind, and its COLD, deadly cold.
I now have learned once and for all, to layer more carefully, only adding layers as they are warranted.

My layers:
underarmor- top and bottom
Polypros- top and bottom
another heavy poly shirt
wool sweater
fleece
microfleece and nylon windbreaker
USCG ripstop BDU pants
fleece hat
Heavy wool socks (that work really well) inside 400 gram pack boots

I slept on a sleeping mat, had 2 ponchos, 2 poncho liners.

The issue with not using a bag isnt insulation, its that the blankets shift in sleep, and allow cold spots, something I am sick of trying to fight with...its a sleeping bag for this oldman from now on.

More in a minute!

Great stuff Gene!

I would love to join you 1 of these days bro.

Edit

Ouch, just read your last post. That sucks. I can understand why Wes didn't share his sleeping bag with what you put him through at the CT Gathering.. :D

Looks like it started out fun, anyway:D Glad you like the knife, sorry the night sucked so bad! You're way braver than me:p I can see how you'd end up in that predicament, though. I sweat a lot, so I can see getting myself caught up in something similar. That's why I moved to the desert;)

RIGHT!? Yeah, part of this was to push the limits, and thats the fun part. Wes had a really awesome kit, and with him there, it was a safe experiment. He was constantly waking up and checking on me...ultimately, he basically said if I was that cold, we should go. Which is pretty cool of him, cause he was nice and warm...and snoring quite loudly! :thumbdn::D
Basically, it ws a good call..on the ride home, just before midnight, my lungs started to close up big time, and my fingers had just about had enough...infact 2 of my finger tips hurt for most of this week. I dont know if they started to freeze or what...I had 2 pairs of gloves...but I dint wear them to often...I was always doing something, and they basically annoyed me. I will most likely go back to my old stand by for gloves...military wool inserts. They have always served me well, and I didnt have any with me this time.

The trip didnt suck at all...I had a day out in the woods...the worst day in the woods is better than the best day in town! The knife is awesome, Wes liked it alot too. I beat the snot outta it, that frozen birch was HARD...your knife took it all without an issue Walt.
