I have a Buck 119 circa 1968 or so, simply stamped "Buck 119". Can anybody tell me about the steel type and what difference there is between "119" and "119 special" if there is any.Thanks..I'm new to collecting Buck:confused:.

akula83,
Did you mean to type that it is stamped "Buck / U.S.A." ? The model number is "119" and the model name is "Special" so you can find references to either the model number or the name or a combination. Either way, it is the same knife and there is not a variation called the "119 Special". Model numbers were added to Buck knives about 1972 (maybe a bit earlier on some models) and the first fixed blade models oriented the stamp to be read with with the knife pointed down. Later (probably to accomodate the new upright, rotating dealer display cabinets), the stamp was changed to be read with the knife pointed up. At this point in time, the steel used was 440C. I hope this adequately answers your questions.

yes it does, thank you. With the knife pointing up, from top to bottom it reads.... Buck- 119- USA.

Something else, I need to sharpen this knife, is there a better method for sharpening this steel ? (440c).
