Sometimes these are called French mullberry but since they are in Texas I call them American Beauty Berry. They ripen in the fall to a really cool purple color and are really good to eat right off the bush. I even got the grandkids eating them like popsicles. The blade that was just right for the job was an 11.5 " Sirupati by Rajkumar.
The bushes have long thin straight branches with clusters of berries at each leaf node. One sharp quick flick worked out just wonderfully. Fast and small enough to put back in my pocket and take my berries to the next bush.
They make good wine too if you get enough of them!
Im a little too late this year getting to them or there would have been a lot more for the picking. The leaves make a very good mosquito repellant. I have tried it and they do work. Wet one hand shake it off and rub both hands together and you get just enough water to roll a few leaves together into a wad. Keep rolling until the you get the juice out of them and rub it on exposed skin and hope your not allergic to them. Good to do a test spot first if your new to it.
Here is what you end up with except hopefully much more. Oh well next year ill be ready! Cleaning them from the stalk is as easy as a rubbing or twisting motion relieving them of the stem. I did try another way and worked surprisingly well! Maybe thats what the cho is for
One quick pull with the thumb across the top of the cho stripped them clean from the stem! Bigger stem requires bigger cho! Closed cho may even be better?
And Whallla! A jar and a half of jam! Not much but sure is good! Has a light tangy but very addictive flavor. Very unique!
Time for butter and bisquits! Enjoy!
