Hi All,

I have been so busy lately that I haven't had the opportunity to upload any new photos - but I have definitely managed to get out for a few hikes. Here are a few views from a recent hike in the Gatineau Hills.

It was a terrific day for a wander through the woods:

I just about stumbled into a few fantastic deer beside a partially dried-out marshy area. They sprang away and watched me carefully from a distance.

A view from one of my favourite off-the-beaten-path vantage points:

It was a windy day up there. I had been gathering dry wood for a while, so I didn't have to scrounge around when I arrived. After strategically stacking the wood about my water bottle, I used a bit of bullrush fluff, some fuzz-sticks and shaved curls, and a scrap of char cloth go get a fire going. The wind ensured that the fire, once it had taken hold, spread quickly.

Here's a shot of my fire (and coffee-to-be) and my belt knife for the day - a Mora blade that I handled. It's a treat to carry and use.

After a day of hiking in Gatineau, I like to grab a pint in the village of Wakefield. I have been noticing this sign on the way to the pub for a while, and I decided to take a picture for you guys. Odd, isn't it? I assume it means that one is not allowed to hunt in the nearby woods, but I prefer to interpret it as 'Don't Shoot The Small Evergreens'. ;)

All the best,

Good stuff Mentor.

Shooting evergreen trees has become a problem everywhere. I believe it has something to do with Fatwood. :p

All the leaves have fallen over here as well, soon we will get to see your epic snow shoe pics! I always enjoy those.

There's a dusting on the ground today! It won't be long! I have a new pair of all-season boots (Columbia), and I can't wait to see how they fare this snowshoeing season. Bring it on, I say!

Great pics!

Whenever you go back and feel like having company, give me a shout! My house is right besides the park. I'm getting ready for the snowshoeing season :D

Here's some shots my friends took (J_Roc and greyhaven - thanks again guys!) on our last hiking in the Firetower area of the park. We had the chance to see a beaver (actually 2), and nice scenery despite the cloudy day.

Hey,

I had a blast when we went to the firetower, I will post some more pics from the day.

Mentor, love the "don't shoot the trees" sign :)

I love the pictures of streams and water in general. Thanks for sharing.

Nice stuff guys, I love Gattineau park having lived in Hull for two years myself. I think that sign means, no hunting rocketships :D

A few more images from recent Gatineau hikes:

This little spider surprised me. It was wandering right down the middle of the trail, intent on its business, seemingly without a care. It was a decent size, too - about as big as a quarter.

It has been getting dark rather early, so my hike extended into dusk. And then evening.

Mentor, I must be missing something. You travel/drive out to Gatineau from Toronto just for a day hike? Dang... makes me feel lazy for sometimes not wanting to even walk across the street to a decent gully/creek/trail area.

Wakefield seems a bit out of the way too, if Toronto is in fact home. Nice pics. Thanks.

I had a great time as well. I very was surprised at how steep the first climb was. Can't wait for the next time.

Here are some pics from a hike that defaultuser and I did in Gatineau Park in late October. As greyhaven mentioned, the first climb is pretty steep, but well worth it for the view once you are up there. Enjoy...

I have a pair of Columbia all seasons too and paired with a good pair of wool socks you should be good to about -30, I even stepped in a creek on time filled them with water and kept snowshoeing for another 4 hours with no issues!

I don't care about your municipal by-laws. I'm going to shoot all the Christmas trees and then there won't be any Christmas this year! Mwahahahaha!
