I got my Spyderco Delica and BM 551 lately, as well as a Leatherman xe6. Now the Delica and xe6 I've been carrying a bit. The xe6 just got some rust on it recently after a heavy thunderstorm, and the Delica has some grit in the pivot area. I wanted to oil and protect the two before I even started carrying them, but I couldn't wait for my free sample of Blue Lube to come in from LM, and none of the brick and mortar stores around carry the usual CLP, Militec, etc that I see recommended on this site.
My question is, if and when I finally get my hands on Militec/CLP/whatever (I have read the Ultimate Lubricant Thread, but have yet to make up my mind), what steps should I take to properly clean and lubricate my knife? Should I just put the substance in the pivot area first, or should I wipe it down and/or run it under hot water and soap? I figure if I run it under water as has been suggested, I stand the risk of gathering rust. On the other hand, I don't understand how these products can possibly get rid of grit on their own; do they dissolve it or something?
