lateral load strength difference?

If I may ask, between the Skeleton Key and the Assault Shaker, not to mention INFI in general (but with these two specifically), is there a difference in lateral load strength between a knife of 3/16th" stock and one that's 1/4" stock?

Oh, when you order an Assault Shaker or Skeleton Key from the factory, can you order them with a standard V ground edge instead of the asymmetrical edge? I'm just unsure of my ability to produce a consistent edge on an asymmetrical edge. Thanks!

I can't answer the lateral load strength part of your question as I've only handled the SK and that was at Blade Show.

However, the edge part I can answer. Any of the Busse knives can be ordered with the symetrical grind rather than the assymetrical grind, just give the shop a call to order and let them know that's what you want. 419-923-6471

Yes, a 1/4" blade will be stronger than a 3/16" blade (given they have the same design/geometry). The AS will be significantly more durable than the SK, but the SK also has some major advantages, IMHO (size, weight, "pointyness", etc.). Both are great little blades!

Lateral strength is quadratic with thickness, so going from 1/3 to 1/4 is about a 70% increase in strength, quite significant. Still, considering the small length of the blade, the production of torque is going to be limited. If you would break a 3/16" blade of that size, you would snap off a Battle Mistress easily.

That's interesting Cliff. Could you elaborate a little, perhaps comparing, theoretically, the lateral strength of blades that are 3/16 and 1/4 and 5/16 and all the same length, for instance all badger attacks or steel hearts. By percentage, how much stronger is 1/4 stock blade than a 3/16 stock? How much stronger is 5/16 than 1/4 stock? How about 5/16 vs 3/16?

We of mathematically challenged minds want to know :D ;) :D
