Hello,

Have you notice any play in your Spyderco linerlocks when you push the liner far from the blade.
(When the liner don't touch it and the blade is "free" from its tension)

Is it a way to adjust the tension on the starmate without trimming the screw ?
(Give me another reason to hate Spyderco!)

Cheers,

JM

Just looked, no side to side play. Good luck with your's.

Hi NEMO.
You should not have to do anything to the screew, except tighten it a little bit.
If this does not work then send it to us.
Thanks and have a good day.
Vince.

No lateral play on mine, but there is fore/aft play. The liner slides on the blade tang and you can move the blade closed about 1/8" when it is in the locked open position. Light tapping on the back of the blade causes the lock to fail and the blade to close. Hope it wears in or I may have to send it back.

Would adjusting the piviot screw help on this? Does this knife have a concentric pivit pin? How about taking apart the knife and running a course diamond stone on the top of the liner to rough it up perhaps to minimize the slipping?

Ron1, don't mess with the pivot screw. We have repeatedly been told that this must be done by the factory. You may tighten the screw to adjust the tension on opening or closing the blade, but the pivot should be set by the factory in order for the liner lock to work right. I would suggest sending it back to Spydie. You do have excess play and none of my Spydie liner locks have that play nor do they unlock in any spine whack test (or twisting, for that matter).

Nemo: Ha, fat chance!

Sometimes the blade on a linerlock can have a little lateral play until the lock engages and imparts a very slight tilt to the blade (in addition to locking it up) that eliminates this play. In extreme cases you can see that the locked blade is not quite parallel with the liners. This looseness gives the blade very light action but I tend to worry that it might make unlocking from torquing slightly easier. I don't have evidence for this, I just think that lateral play in the unlocked blade means that the locking face could shift slightly while the lock is engaged.

The eccentric pivot that controls the precise lockup on the Starmate is in the left (non-clip) scale. It is held quite firmly by friction and maybe a little adhesive. The screw in the right (clip) scale is merely the male portion that holds the scales together. It may be tightened or loosened without causing the female portion in the left scale to turn (***this is my experience - proceed at your own risk***). A little adjustment of the right-side pivot screw should loosen or tighten the action.

If your screw seems tightened down firmly and play still exists, the stop-pin may not be fully seated. It is a press-fit and requires substantial force to seat fully, more than tightening the pivot exerts. If it isn't fully seated, the liners won't be parallel and no amount of fiddling with the pivot will fix this. You then have two options - send it to Spyderco, or use a clamp (mask the handle to prevent marring) to press the scales at the pivot pin and seat it fully. the latter is also at your own risk
