I have finally broke down and got a digital camera. So here is the address for a picture of my latest bowie. Sorry I don't know how to paste it here.

The blade is made from edge quenched 1/4" O1 steel with a triple temper, hand sanded to a 400 grit finish. The fittings are of polished 5160 with file work behind the guard and on the buttcap. The handle is a fossilized horse bone. Note the quartet and pencil for a size comparison.

Beautiful!

Fantastic! Man, you got all the right moves, that is one beautiful knife. Looks like it'd be light and lively, too...

Thanks for sharing, let's see more.

WOW!!!!! That is truely a awesome piece of work.Did you dye the bone or was it already dark like that when you got it?

Thanks for posting my knife to the forums for me Gouge. I will have to check the archives on how to post now that I have my new toy.
I got the horse bone from a fossilized ivory dealer at the Indianapolis Knife show. I purchased two of them. This bone was the creamy color that you see in the photo. The other one also has some of the same color with blue streaks through it. The colors were already throughout the bone, I suppose it is from the minerals in the ground. He said the site they recovered the bones from is an estimated 40,000 years old. I was suprised that grain began to show up as I sanded the bone to final dimensions.
The bowie is pretty quick! I forged a distal taper into the blade and the balance point is a 1/2" in front of the guard.
Is anyone going to the PKA show in Denver this month?

Thats amazing! The bone is as old as those hairy elephants tusks we all use. I wonder why there is no mammoth bones sold? They should have a good mass thickness and color too.

Again, beautiful knife!

Bruce or anybody else that might be interested. Here is a guys email address that sells the Mammoth bone among other fossilized bones at a cost of $5.00 a pound. You might check him out and see what he has.

Beautiful knife!!! :)

I think it was on raising the Mammoth on the Discovery Channel...they were snooping around for tusks and they pulled a couple pieces of ancient horse bone out of the water. Very cool! Looks similar to Sea Cow bone, very nice.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Want to add my appreciation for the pic of the fine knife. Guess my comments on the apparent speediness of it are unnecessary. Looks very well balanced as well. Hope you'll be sharing pics of future knives as well.
