The latest Fourth of July sales brochure from Cold Steel just arrived- when you look at one of the pages, they're selling a "Hai Hocho" with the description of the serrations as "blade needs minimal care and the Spyder-type serrations are ground extra-high..."
How close is CS coming to infringing on a patent or trademark?? I own CS and I also own some Spyderco; I'm just curious if this is an example of riding on somebody else's coattail...Maybe Sal would like to take a look at this.

I somehow doubt that serrations are patentable -- but your mileage may vary.

Certainly from Sal's post about the accurate history of tactical folders where he talks about Lynn Thompson paying royalties even when they weren't needed, I would tend to think that if there is any question Thompson is doing the same thing again.

Sounds more like a case of "giving credit where credit is due" to me.

I just made a neat trade with a fellow Forumite for a Cold Steel Triple-Action Folder. It is a serrated Tanto.

I took this because it is basically something for me to play with and not something I am going to run out and cut something with...

That having been said, I have owned Cold Steel serrated knives and they are BLAH.

They are a perfect pain in the ass to sharpen and CS won't sharpen them for you. Nice huh?

I prefer Spyderco Serrations.

CS's early serrations were SpyderEdge. The recent ones are their own creation. The knives shown in the brochure are probably old stock.

You are right ..If you read the print . these are closeouts and CS is trying to get rid of them.Still a good price if you ask me. I will probably order a couple of things.

I used to be disgusted .Now I am just amused....I feel much better now that I have given up all hope

I think I have to agree with Leo that Cold steel is more on the "giving credit" and "description" of the teeth, rather than "copying".
