OK, so I'm an idiot - and I have the stitches to prove it.

Was driving to work today, and I noticed a bit of extra plastic on the pocket flashlight I carry. No problem! I'll just whip out my faithful Gunting and trim it away. Even as I was doing this, I'm thinking that it would be nasty if I were to slip.

I don't think I need to tell you what happened next. Sliced my left index finger all the way to the bone. Cut a significant blood vessel as well, which was IMMEDIATELY apparent, as the blood quickly began to spurt and run down my arm.

Managed to pull to the side of the road, and pulled out a gauze pad from the small first-aid kit I keep inside the car. Was saturated w/ blood in less than 30 seconds - not good. Added a second - same thing.

Went to the trauma kit in the trunk, and got a large trauma bandage and a roll of Kling gauze. By this time I have blood all over the car, the street, and my clothes. People are definitely slowing down to gawk... Managed to get it to stop running down my arm and got everything wrapped up well enough to drive to the Urgent Care clinic. One look from the front desk, and I got RIGHT in.

Long story short, it took 25 minutes to get the bleeding to stop well enough to put in the four stitches it required. Got a good look at the bone and "innards" of my finger. And got a lecture to be more careful when slicing bagels (OK, so I lied....).

"Hi, my name is James, and I'm an idiot." "HI JAMES!!!"

So...let me get this straight. You were driving down the road and saw a nasty little piece of plastic on your flashlight, which demanded to be trimmed, while you were driving down the road??!! Phew. Good thing you didnt' drop that Gunting. You may have Bobbitized yourself.. Yikes:eek: Be more careful with those toys

Chris.

Be Safe

I was driving in heavy traffic one day and I noticed a thread had come loose on the zipper of my fly. So.............. Not really

Seems like I get nipped more often by my small blades (Cricket and Chive recently) from playing with them. Butt not as deep as you did. So far.......

Be careful and heal quick

Smart people make mistakes too, they just don't talk about 'em ;)

Just picking on you James. I can't call someone an idiot for something I've been guilty of myself. Like pulling a large bowie knife out of it's sheath, and playing with it as I drive down back roads that are notorious for deer. What is it about driving that makes us want to play with sharp pointy things?

Thanks for the validation and support guys. And Duck, believe me, the lecture you mention is one I have heard before from my dear, sweet wife, who truly only has my best interests at heart. Actually, she is really good about this stuff, and only occasionally slips out with an "I told you something like this was going to happen." Of course, this was one of those times.

And to give you an idea about the kind of week I am having, today I dropped my Star-Tac into the toilet while it was flushing. Needless to say, it's toast. But I really like the V.60 I had to replace it with :D . My wife has suggested I not leave the house tomorrow - for the safety of the community at large. I'm inclined to agree....

welcome to the club of those-who-have-seen-their-finger-guts.

I got myself at work with the airvent(while trying to fix it, it fell down and caught my thumb) back around the start of August. No stiches, but I had treated it correctly from all my yrs of first-aid training. 1/2"x1/4", angeled in and corner.

looks almost like uncooked (regular, none of that light cr@p) ground-beef.

the thin ones never heal easy, and after a month I have a dead spot on the side of my left thumb(non-finger side, nail to pad, tip to first joint). The nerves didn't heal yet(if they will, I don't know). I have a cut about 3/4-1" long on the outside of my right index finger, 2yrs old, down to the bone... nerves never healed for the skin there either...

hope it heals...

Let's face it, we're idiot's. Sure, we do something stupid, get a nasty cut and never do that stupid thing again. We find another stupid thing to do.

Your own bone looks pretty cool, doesn't it? When I did a number to my index finger(flexor tendon, nerve artery) and middle finger or long finger(artery, nerve) as the surgeon called it, I got a nice view of my finger, bone and soft tissue around the joint. Interesting about the bleeding, I got two arteries and I was able to stop the bleeding in about 5 minutes with direct pressure and bending my arm tightly. I find it interesting how different responses can be found from similar wounds.

Vampyrewolf, when you hit your nerves, did it feel like an electric shock going up your arm? That's how mine felt. I can still remember that sensation. Did a surgeon look at your wounds?

I've been cut(all my work!) and shocked too many times. it simply felt like hitting about 100volts or so when I got the right hand(index finger). not much...

Actually, the only one I've had looked at was my thumb. it was a bit too open for my tastes, and I would have liked stiches, just got pressure strips holding it closed and had to change the strips/gauze about every 3-4hrs.

Most of my injuries are minor after all my trianing. I get cut and just get it stopped, cleaned and wrapped... then back to whatever I was doing. I should have had a good number of them checked out, but they were small(under an inch, and only surface).
