Caramba! Man that's awesome! How in the heck did you put the eye in that thing without losing the teeth on the rasp? That had to have been magic, no other explanation. In-freakin-credible.

But that's just part of its coolness... This thing just pulls out all the stops, from the hook on the back to the rawhide and pins to the ring on the heel - fantastic. I wanna be a mountain man again!

Mark thanks for making my freakin day.

very cool!!!!

You gotta share the secret to that one. :D

Perty Cool! I love the old look you were able to achive. Can't tell how you did the wrap, can you explain? I seem to be missing one of my rasp's......

Thanks fellers,

This was about as easy a forging project as i could come up with without killing my shoulder. I just heated the rasp and doubled it over on itself and lightly hammered it flat. I let it cool of and soaked in muriatic acid to descale it for about 4 hrs. wire brushed off the stubborn crud and forge welded all but a 1 1/8" area where I wanted the haft to be. I hammered it with the area I wanted welded on the anvil only as to not destroy the pattern of the rasp.

cool indeed, I like the head shape most, especially the way you shaped the spike end. Nicely done.

Awesome job! Looks like she'd do a lot of work. One day I'll be a hawk forger! Thanks for the motivation.

Really neat :)
I like how you used the rasp, gives it an old time look cause you know they would have re used stuff like that back in the old days.
I've got a forge now so I suppose I should try a hawk, I think I'll use the ball peen hammer method though since I'm pretty limited on forging stuff still. Just a couple big hammers and a peice of railroad track  No way I could weld one like that yet.
Now I've got to find a big ball peen hammer.

Hey Matt,

As long as you get it up to welding temperature you could easily weld on a piece of railroad track. The weld is gentle hits anyway. This is a lot easier than the ball peen hammer. They tend to get the blade misaligned with the eye pretty easy if your not careful.

Thanks for the advice Mark
I'm not sure if my forge will weld yet. It doesn't have ITC 100 in it and I haven't burned it for more than about 15 minutes yet, so I don't know how hot it will go. I planned on using ITC100, actually bought it even, but I pulled a bonehead move. Forge design is something I came up with on my own, and while it breathes really well and seems to be efficient, there's no way to get my hand in there now that the satanite has hardened. I could open it back up and only ruin one layer of the blanketing I think, but I want to see what it will do first. Damn thing has a flat tire right now too :grumpy:

Very cool. I've got a few clean rasps sitting in the shop waiting to be used for something. I may have to try that one out if you don't mind.

J. I would imagine folks have been using old rasps since old rasps were new ;)

Just make sure its good steel as a lot are just case hard.

I'll probably weld a 1095 cutting edge in, just to be safe. I just got a hawk order, too. One of my favorite kinds of orders...just make something cool. I think you've given me an idea.
:D
