Hi all, here arse some pics of my latest creation, nothing spectacular but finally a knife made for me that i can use! Its 1095 steel, full flat grind handle is a rosewood i think? Had the wood knocking around for a while now so thought i would put it to some use.

Blade was etched in hot white vinegar to give the patina.

Question on the last picture, there is what looks like a temper line that has been etched around the edges? If it is what that is, could it be i have buggered the temper on the egdes from grinding post heat treat? The spine i can imagine it my not quite have got to temperature during heat treat as it was sitting on its spine on firebrick whilst heating.

It seemed to be nice and hard when sharpening, and I have a chefs knife i have been using for a while now that was heat treated and ground in the same way as this one and seems to be fine (I didnt etch that, the tomatoes did that for me :)

cheers!

First let me say "well done". Nice looking knife.
Variations in shading when etching can come from many sources: surface texture, hardness differences due to tempering, hardness differences due to micro structure (Martensite, Banite, Pearlite, decarb etc.), bubble collection on surface and how clean the surface was prior to etch, to mention the obvious ones.
I do have two questions: how long is the knife? And where on the planet do you live?

Thank you!

The knife is approx 23cm in total length, with a blade length of 12cm

It's always nice to let the members know where you live. If it turns out you are within driving distance , many knifes makers will invite you to come by their shops they can give your work a good look and possibly some good advice. This being said, due to the COVID-19 isolation and of course the slightly long drive, I won't expect you to come by.

The reason I asked about the length, was to determine how large the finger grove between the blade and the grips is. The diameter looks a little small, which may forces the knuckle of your hand into the sharp rear corner of the cutting edge. Just a comment. I make most of my handlers in a similar shape.

The finger hole feels Ok, I had to widen it a lot from the original design, Its large enough to fit my second finger knuckle in but gets a bit tight when i squeeze, but i use it witht he first (or last) knuckle in so it fits OK.

Its definitely something that can catch you out though! i didnt realise till I had it profiled!
