Here is the new one. This time I started with the black KaBar with rubbery handle. First I cut the handguard off the top side and dremeled in thumb notches. Then, I stripped the black coating off. The steel already had a good dark surface under the coating so I furthered the patina and then finished it off with some use of 1000 grit sandpaper on certain areas to give it a nice look. Then I patinaed the whole thing a little bit more. I think it turned out great. To give it some character, I immediately took it out for some pruining, chopping, and wood carving.

Nice!

You're making me miss my Camillus Air Force Survival Knife.

Great job on the mods.

Thanks bro. I think it's an under-rated knife. I'll admit, I got the combo edge when I still had a lot of ninja in me, but I still like using them even though I don't care for serrations on my woods knives anymore. I find ways to make them useful. I think I bought those when I was in my late teens.

My Camillus was 1968 production. It was stuck in the springs under the seat of a 1981 Chevy pick-up I bought as a work truck.

Rusty and dull, I cleaned it up and it turned out to be a great knife. I used it for years as my primary fixed blade. Best guess is I left it behind on a camping trip las year. Not exactly high-visibility with the leather handle and dark sheath.

Definately under-rated.

I agree. I gave mine to my older son and he loves it. I used the heck out of it and it was always begging for more. I have a mind to do some mods now, especially on the guard.

I think with a knife blade that long - a small bit of serration can't hurt. When you need to cut cordage - there is nothing better. I don't think it will hurt you...

It takes an edge great. I've had those things long enough that I have sharpening them down to a science. They hold the edge fairly well too. I've never needed to sharpen one whilst still out. I usually just touch it up whenever I get home or when I finish whatever cutting project I use them for. It's definitely one of those knives that like most is easier to keep sharp than make sharp. If you let it get too far out of whack it takes a little work to bring it back, but as long as you keep up with it, it's no big job.

great mods to great knives
I have a surplus Camillius from the very early 70s
wicked sharp with a DMT extra fine
