The new copy of the Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog arrived today. On the back cover is a "Warehouse Find" offer for an Old Timer Knife.

The use of the phrase "Warehouse Find" is intended to deceive shoppers into thinking the knife is an original Schrade product. Found in a warehouse? Yeah right, found in a warehouse in a box that was shipped from China as long ago as three years....

Buyer beware and all that...

Don't you just love SMKW? You could easily get fooled with that catalogue print, I saw that also.

I'm not defending SMKW in the incident you mentioned, but I find that with everything I order online or from anybody's printed catalog I have to be EXTREMELY careful when reading the description of an item, and I still have to ask (usually on the phone) where things are made these days. An astonishing number of products are Chinese now! Some are OK. Most aren't.

I didn't intend to "diss" the quality of Chinese-made products or the Chinese people in this topic. But most people who collect Schrade knives are only interested in the original products, items actually made by Schrade before they went out of business.

The catalog item (back cover, full color, giant lettering "WAREHOUSE FIND") is advertised in such a way to decieve shoppers into thinking these are original Schrade knives when they are not. They are current-production knives imported by Taylor Brands from China and can not be any older than 2005-ish.

If you misplaced a crate of Taylor Old Timer knives on Thursday and found them on Monday, technically they are a "Warehouse Find". But is that an honest way to do business?

It was obvious to me that these Warehouse Find knives are modern China-made reproductions, but it may not be obvious to everyone else. So my post was just a friendly "heads up".

Best Wishes,

I called them about this "warehouse find" and asked if it was USA. NO was the answer so I asked why they didn't mention that in their ad.I was told I should know better because Schrade USA closed their doors in 2004. Duh!

So that would tell us that they have completely exhausted all the stock that they pulled from the Schrade closing in 2004 would it? all those truck container loads of knives. If there is anything left I'm sure there will be warehouse finds of the future, keep your eyes peeled.

In the catalog that I received, the description of the knife in the ad includes the term "imported".

They will hold the USA Schrades untilll the prices get really high. Then they will suddenly discover truck loads of knives that were lost in the sale. Making millions....

oh....

What about the Schrade Walden Trapper on the inside of the back cover? The tang stamp shows USA. Is that one safe or a "mis-print"?
