What's up with the 61OT? Specifically why wasn't it more popular?

This is my latest OldTimer, and it's possibly my favorite so far. The action is perfectly smooth and the springs are strong. The blade choices seem like a perfect mixture, and large enough to be useful. The rounded bolsters are more attractive than the squared bolsters of the 34OT, 8OT, etc. And with a low and narrow profile, I imagine this would be a perfect knife for pants pockets.

To any other OldTimer collectors, this is one that you won't want to overlook.

But it seems there are very few of these around. There are currently none for sale on eBay, and the only result in a "Completed Items" search is the one I bought.

Nice score, this is one on my list of must have OT's. You are also correct that they are one of the more uncommon models on ebay. Does anyone know the years of production? I don't think they ran that long.

I had one in really rough shape, it had been grinder sharpened and had the snot beat out of it. I gave it away to another forum member, to much work to try to get it into what would have amounted to fair/poor condition.

I don't know about you, but for the patterns I lack the prices are too high. $100 for an Old Timer? No freakin' way! Not unless it lays golden eggs.

So I felt pretty lucky that the bidding on this one ended under $35.

Bob,
From Robert Clemente's book.
"The 61OT was introduced in 1976 and appeared regularly in the catalogs until 1990
First catalog price in 1976 was $10.75, no sheath
Last catalog price in 1990 was $26.95, no sheath"

I do not know how many were made but there are few around. Good find.

I guess I better look for a couple of those, just to keep peace in our house.
Fixing pants pockets with holes is a touchy subject.
Wish they sold a fits-all pocket bottom you could glue onto the original pocket.Duct tape isn't a good cure, but it's better than losing a good knife that you finally got sharpened down to where it suits you.

I love the 61OTs. They are big, but not excessive, and very sleek looking. They're like a "cool 8OT" in my opinion.

Besides the 858, the 61 is my favorite. I have two brand new ones and one that my dad had, which I carry on special days.

I have one 61OT I bought probably on the late 70's or early 80's. It is one of my favorites. The perfect pocket size with a respectable blade.
Nice find Bob. I have been trying to find another but no luck. They are rare on ebay and usually more than I am willing to spend for a duplicate.

These are really neat knives. They are certainly not plentiful in our area. I picked one up in April '04 at a local collectibles shop. Never been sharpened or used, but had a few small spots on the blades. He was asking $16.95, which I thought was too much at the time, but decided to spring for it. I oiled it, wrapped it, and put it up. Now it looks like a bargain. Alan

Now you see why I like my 897UH! The 61OT is an Old Timer version of my edc knife. I have nearly completed the pool started last Wednesday, and the 897 has not needed sharpening yet. The sheepfoot needs recrinking, and I'll hone the blades tonight, but after a full season of construction, the blades are still full, and the knife is ready for the next pool I dig Tuesday, and the one the week after that. I love a good knife! Hey.... I need to find a 61OT! (Slim Premium Stock)

I really do like Schrade knives. That takes care of not being on topic. Now...

Bob W, I see you are in Raton. Next time you're down Springer way say hello to Gail and Marietta Shell. They are my cousins. They live at French Corner right beside the big new truck stop. Not so new now though. Lots of horse pens, barns etc. Can't miss it. I sure do like that country. I liked it a lot better before Ted Turner got so much of it.
