I picked up this old new york knife Co. easy open yesterday at a yardsale for $5. It had a cip out of the right handle. Just so happens I had a spare scrap piece of bone, nearly identical in color, I fitted it in around midnight last night and worked it down. Just looks like a hairline crack now, better than what it was, not trying to hide it just make it look better, i'll EDC this one for a while I really like this small EZ open pattern. Isn't this what they called rogers bone? It looks very similar to the bone used on the older winchester knives, didn't NYKC make some knives for winchester, or was that keen kutter?

Nice Patch! and knife! It's jigged bone, but not Rodger's (sp?) jigging. I've got one or two, and will post a picture.

I don't think that New York Knife Company ever made Keen Kutter or Winchester knives. They did make a lot of contract knives including John Primble and Hibbard Spencer Bartlett.

Winchester and Keen Kutter had some commonality. Winchester started knife manufacturing in 1919 or so....Keen Kutter was having their knives made by Walden Knife Company at that time..later I think Simmons bout out Walden and Winchester and Simmons merged, so the same factory may have made both brands for some years.

William El Lob, that is a very neat link. I thank you kindly.

I believe that the sample shown as Rogers jig is a modern interpretation. It looks too "regular"; It is more random on older knives. Still looking for an example or two.

either way, great knife at a sweet price!!! awesome job on the handles, looks great!

Nice job!
You gonna open shop? I got a few that need handles. :)

Not really into doing other peoples right now LRV, afraid I'll screw them up, it's about the way my luck goes :$

Your luck seems to be turning into a marketable skill MM. Your work on this one proves that. Don't remove the joining line from knives like this that you replace broken cover pieces on. It keeps the knife honest. I like that. Keep it up.

Another fine piece of work, MM.

Maybe you should do cosmetic surgery. :)

It's a shame to see an other wise solid and sweet knife with a bite out of it. The knife gods are smiling down on you for your humanitarian work.

Nice...

MM, here are what I believe to be some reasonable versions of Rogers' bone. In my experience, it is a fairly shallow jig, and displays an almost total "texture", as opposed to a series of jigs or "divots", in a pattern. I'm not the expert, and hope to hear other opinions. I will post this in Bernie Levine's forum too, and see what he and others there have to say.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. Thanks for clarifying what rogers bone really looks like waynorth, just got my bones mixed up again :D. Are those your knives? They are nice I especially like the whittler on the far right. Thanks again

Here's another shot of those knives MM, since you liked them!
From the top, a Queen master series, hand made by one of their old cutlers in 1980. The bone is darker on the front. Then a Case Classic 63083 in purple bone (odd color, but a nice knife), made in 1992, and finally a large Case 6392 stockman, from 1974, all unused.

Below is the Case 1994 NKCA Knife...ROG 6211 1/2 SS...considered by Case to be Rogers jigging. Mark side is honey...Pile side looks like amber or a burnt bone.

A pic with the blades open as requested, still practicing indoor lighting.

And my latest project, a very used and neglected electric knife company easy open jack from the late 1800's, unfinished of course.
