My latest Ontario is an SP5. It seems they have reverted back to leaving the swedge unsharpened. Also, the sheath is no longer a USA DeSantis made nylon sheath, it is now a nylon sheath made in China (but the quality seems fine). The blade's finish may be an epoxy or powder coated thing, but it sure looks more like a phosphated finish (aka parkerized).
Of course it also has the laser engraved info that replaced the older stamped in markings.

I find everything very well executed on this knife, especially for it's price point... Two thumbs up :)

Congrats. I love my SP5. Crazy good value for the money. I think it's super underrated. Fast and light in the hand yet still thick enough for most any heavy duty work.
I don't know if the swedges were ever sharpened. Mine was not from a couple of years ago.
Mine was also dull as dirt and had wonky grinds coming out of the box. But with a little work it took a great edge and is now my favorite big blade.
I will say the sheath change is disappointing. Being a US citizen, that high quality sheath (made in the USA) was one of the reasons I bought that blade. But I'm not an Asian hater and understand good quality products can be produced there.
Enjoy and give us some thoughts after you've used it.

thats the same style sheath my sp6 has that i dislike as its too small a belt loop for a real belt.

great knife ya got though. enjoy 'er.

I have a select few knives that I've purchased for my collection that were simply too cool to only own one of, and added a second, or even third specimen of them into my collection. Well, the Ontario SP5 has made it onto that list, (with today my having ordered a second specimen of it). The first one was very well executed, and I'm hoping to have the second one match that. It's not only a lot of knife, it's also a lot of quality for the money :)

Cool! They look like mine!

Yes I FINALLY got around to getting an SP-5! Sale price was right, reading this thread told me they had unsharpened swedges so I had to get one. The unsharpened swedge lets it be legally be carried out and about in the wilderhood where its not a "WEAPON OF DOOM!" because of the sharpened swedge on earlier production runs.

Some points of view on the knife.

HOW COULD OKC SUN SET THIS KNIFE!?! Atleast it was a "soft sunset" that let them bring it back in to production, I can see doing less production runs of the model, but sun set it?

From my limited experience so far, its light and fast handling for a knife its size, the blade has a nice width to spine ratio thingy with a nice thick spine to be its back bone. The blade does great with the FFG of the blade and spine thickness reminding me of my RD9 that helps in its performance factor. The nice end and top and bottom of the clippy part seems it will be good for cutting branches and such for trail trimming. The rest of the blade is the usual great function type. You can choke up to work with it, the knife should baton goodly when needed to.

As others have said many a time, the SP-5 is a great multi-tool of a fix blade. Er make that a GREAT AFFORDABLE multi-tool of a fix blade.

Reason I never got the SP-5 for a while was the sharpened swedge for legal reasons, and it was still in production and I wanted to get some knives before they disappeared that were out of production. Like my being a super fan of the SP-51, its not the "perfect knife" for my uses, it has no full tang with a nice thumping and whumping hilt, and no micarta handle, but its a compromise I can live with.

I just received a KaBar Big Brother leather sheath for my SP5. It fits but the handle snap will need some work to get it to snap. It’s a little more robust than the factory nylon sheath.

Yeah the OKC under whelming sheath has its draw backs, but it makes their knives more affordable, and it looks like the sheath will last a while.

My only problem with an OKC "new and unimporved!" sheath was the one for my SP-10 that is literally eating the sheath up so much I don't trust it, all the other recent acquirements I got do work, not as goodly as the last sheath but they work OKshly and make for a slimmer and trimmer carry that I do like.

I'll check!

Yep they do!

The "new" version of the SP-5 with no sharpened swedge lets me use it in public around here and not put it under glass for lookers to look at.
