Latest Tidioute order may be a bit gaudy...

I just placed an order for one of these Tidioute French Kates. I find myself being just like the guy in 'A Christmas Story'.... where he just loved the gaudy looking leg lamp he had won. Others may see it as gaudy, I kind'a do too.... but mostly find it unique. I like the etching placed on the blade, the decorations on the package... and just overall could not resist :-) Anyhow, hope it arrives with no issues, which would surely kill my current enthusiasm. Will share pics of the actual specimen when it arrives :-)

Possibly a little more useful than the lamp though... the shoe can be used as a bottle opener :)

Yep, lots of Tidioutes are serialized.

Yeah... I noticed for a few bucks less I could have gotten a non serialized one.... it was not a big difference, and so I just eenie minee moed it... and the serialized got the nod :-)

I just noticed the bottle opening heel too... Well gaudy or not at the practicality of that moves it up a few notches in my book!

I'm feeling an urge to try out a French Kate. Let us know how the heel works out as a bottle opener once you get it. I think I remember reading that some people said it was useless as a bottle opener, but that might have been the earlier runs.

Sorry that I would not be able to help you with that question. Since I buy these strictly as a hobby collectible, I will not be using this to pry open any beer bottles any time soon ;-) Actually, my being a wine drinker, I'd be better served with a SAK with a cork screw, lol! I do have a beer every now and then.. but my little trusty Buck Metro takes care of that for me ;-)

Had to laugh at the Christmas Story reference... but in the end the leg knife is one bridge too far for this guy. I tend to be a bit neat and understated. I could almost see the looks of my friends and coworkers if news of a leg knife got out. :)

There are much more gaudy handle choices than the black ebony for that knife. That pattern is not my cup of tea but if you like it, go for it.

I remember reading that the lady leg knife had 2 purposes... One as a bottle opener and the other as a way for a person to thumb their noses at the temperance movement during prohibition. I'm sure someone here has more info.

Just what you need, then... something to stir things up! Something to break whatever mold they all seem to have you in.... A leg knife, baby... that is what you NEED! lol! ;-)

I was just wondering how a corkscrew could fit into the French Kate frame. The French Kate would make a fancy little bar tender's knife if it also had a cork screw.

I was very close to ordering the higher grade in genuine elephant ivory.. But the ebony and blade etching won over on this one for me. Besides that, even the packaging graphics seem cooler on this one. At less than half the price of the elephant ivory version, I saved money on my decision too! ;-)

But hey... the Ivory version may end up in my collection too... I mean, how cool would that be..... Ebony and Ivory... Oh boy, that tune is now in my head! ;-)

I never knew it doubled as a bottle opener. That is really handy. Its still not my cup o' tea tho. It looks like it would be uncomfortable to use like the heel would dig into your palm.

I have an old Case leg knife that is in serious need of repair, two blades. My buddy gave it to me, his neighbor gave it to him. He said the veteran told him he used it to kill Nazis in WW2. Seems like knives from this era go hand in hand with wild tales, whether told by the original owner, or the current one. Anyway, it is a neat piece. Buy whatever you like and enjoy it. Should make an interesting conversation piece. Quality made product too, not just a novelty piece.

If the heel indeeds works well as a bottle opener I would be tempted to purchase on that fact alone. Kinda cool IMO

Seems to me that the edge of the bottle cap would wreck havoc o the softer nickel silver bolster.
