Latigo leather is oil tanned and used for harness making and pretty much lasts forever. IMO it's the best leather to house axes, hawks and knives made from carbon steel because of the oil content. It can be re-oiled on the inside without making much difference to the look of the outside of the sheath. A friend of mine is a logger and has asked me to make a bunch of axe sheaths for him so I made this one up for a trail hawk to show him about what the finished product would look like.
This hide is thicker than usual at about 11 oz. The welted edge and bottom is 9/16ths thick. I glue the welts first then used double the normal thread, in this case I used a synthetic sinue. The ends of the stitch lines are triple stitched. I like the sinue because it doesn't wear as much as a twisted thread and lays nice and flat in the thread groove slightly below the surface of the sheath surface. All edges are treated with Gum tragacanth and burnished. This on has a Sam Brown closer.
