Latigo leather for life

Latigo leather is oil tanned and used for harness making and pretty much lasts forever. IMO it's the best leather to house axes, hawks and knives made from carbon steel because of the oil content. It can be re-oiled on the inside without making much difference to the look of the outside of the sheath. A friend of mine is a logger and has asked me to make a bunch of axe sheaths for him so I made this one up for a trail hawk to show him about what the finished product would look like.
This hide is thicker than usual at about 11 oz. The welted edge and bottom is 9/16ths thick. I glue the welts first then used double the normal thread, in this case I used a synthetic sinue. The ends of the stitch lines are triple stitched. I like the sinue because it doesn't wear as much as a twisted thread and lays nice and flat in the thread groove slightly below the surface of the sheath surface. All edges are treated with Gum tragacanth and burnished. This on has a Sam Brown closer.

Best regards

We need some pics of the top and bottom along with a trail hawk in it.:D

How much would you charge for one of those?

Here's a pic of the bottom edge showing the welt. Sorry, I don't have a trail hawk right now but it fits well.
The pic is not too great and the sun has gone down, i'll take another tomorrow.

Latigo is a neat tanning process, It's a Spanish term meaning "whiplash leather" , after it is tanned it is then tumbled in large drums with oils and waxes, process is called "stuffing" because it stuffs the grain full. That's what gives it it's great waterproofing abilities. Dyes are added during this step to give it the traditional red color. I love the sheath, you are a talented man.......Randy

Pipeman you did it again. Great looking leather work.
Thats some heavy duty looking leather....Very nice !

What color would you call that finish on the leather?
Very nice job by the way, I always look forward to seeing you handy work.

Robin, that sheath looks great and thanks for the info regarding oil tanned leather and carbon steel edged tools.

Thanks very much for all your kind comments folks, I very much appreciate your input.
Ed, latigo pretty much comes in only this burgundy red colour or black although I picked up a piece of a nasty yellow colour a while ago, good for strong ties and straps. It's a very dense and strong leather.

Thanks again
best regards

Robin
