Ok yet another Lava in the mail this week. I think I've seen more of these lately than anything else actually. Anyway, this one is here for being taken completely apart, separating out all the parts and then rebuilding it all back together again in burgundy linen micarta. You know this burgundy or plum micarta is more expensive than all the others? I wonder why?

We'll get to this one in order of recieved.

Thanks Brian.

Steve, most anything available in colors, red will be the most expensive. I was told it's because of the amount of pigments required to produce the darker red color. I worked in a auto body shop, once upon a time, and the red/burgandy colors were always the most expensive. White was the least.

Ah. I thought I remembered someone telling me something like that. I bought this sheet and was shocked to see how much more it was compared to the green and black, and natural I buy. I thought at first they made an error in pricing it.

I have the Lava in black linen micarta and it is a very comfortable little utility folder. I find the ss cold, slippery and not attractive. The burgundy should be a real looker. Cant wait to see pics of wip.

yeah bell, I believe I'm essentially getting the same job Steve did on yours, same goes for the Navigator2, just different color micarta ... ;)

Your gonna love it. Absolutly will not be able to put it down. Cant wait to see the color. The Lava is a stout little guy with great Spyderco ergos and my EDC. The jimping on the Lava, plus the slight extra width and weight reduction of the micarta make it really handy.

Made a little head way with the burgundy micarta project here today.

Got all my parts separated out and redrilled for the new size barrels I'll be using.

Even got my low rider clip started for this one and then got my tracings made for the pattern to cut out when I get to that part. Making progress as I can so stay tuned.

And here are a set of scales cut out. Should move along now.

Finally got my scanner worked out. Well, the wife consented to 'loan' me her adapter to make some scans. I have these from yesterday to put up. They are near done currently and those will be following. Sorry I have both here in one pic. I wasn't sure my scanner would keep working I guess so I felt rather than risk it until I'm convinced its not just a fluke that I'd snap them while I could.

Won't be long now. These are both just a few steps from completed and then digital pic time. Then you'll get to see the true color I think of these burgundy scales you picked out.

Got a pic posted of both on the Nav thread but its too late to take digitals now. I'll try to snap some in the morning for before they ship out. This Lava is flawless.

I still have to work out the action problem with the one washer on the Nav though. Shouldn't be too tough. I'm pretty sure I know what it needs.

This one and the Nav are packed up and on the way to you.

Thanks

Jaislandboy..these really are good looking. You had a few bumps along the road to completion but Iam sure it will be worth the wait. Happy New Year.

Looks great. Steve, what went into pulling apart the ss handles? Just curious because I have a police that I really like but it sucks at the same time because lefty carry of it just doesnt work.

Its a bit of work on some and others just pop apart. Both of these from Brian gave me fits getting them apart. When I know the old sides are being thrown out I just vice my big monster flat head screwdriver in my work bench and simply shove the flat head up inside between the scales and twist. It pops apart or I know the reason why not. :D

Usually you can do it by hand but these last two gave me fits so the screwdriver had to be clamped up.

You can't expect to get them back together again like this. Well, thats not true, lets just say you can't expect to reassemble them cleanly anyway. I'm sure you can get them together don't get me wrong but its a long process to clean it back up to cover your marks and the fact that its been apart if you were to try this. Since I don't have to worry about that I simply discard them. Idealy the factory would replace the pins since most of the time they bend and deform from this method of wedging them apart.
