LAWKS vs. Auto LAWKS

Hi Everyone, I'm new here and new to knife collecting world. I like folders, and more specifically more "tactical" folders.

I just recently picked up a CRKT point guard and a CRKT M16-14ZSF.
I can't see a difference between the LAWKS on the point guard and the Auto LAWKS on the M16. They both look to be the same mechanism and they operate the same. I am curious as to the differences. Thanks for the help.

If you have one with both and they are both functioning properly you will see a difference. The Auto-Lawks is just that it engages automatically when you open the knife. The Lawks is a manual system that you engage with your thumb on the point guard. So it sounds like either you got two with the same system or else the auto-lawks is not functioning properly.

Down with Auto-Lawks!

On one of my new CRKTs the Auto-Lawks did not engage automatically if I opened the knife gently. After a few dozen cycles it began engaging reliably every time. Not that it really matters.

AutoLAWKS is indicated by a red dot on the mechanism. If there is no red dot, then you have the LAWKS. Some prefer the LAWKS over the autoLAWKS and vice versa. For me, my CRKT m16-01K has been good to me and the autoLAWKS has worked every time so far.

Well it doesn't have the red dot. The CRKT website said it's auto LAWKS. How possible is it CRKT put the wrong information on their website?

My guess is that the web site had been updated with the very latest model specs and details. Auto LAWKS is a new feature so you must have older non auto LAWKS models. Consider yourself fortunate:D

Some dealers have the older models of certain knives, as indicated in my 2006 CRKT catalog: "Please note that retailers may have inventory of LAWKS-equipped models into 2006". If the place you bought it from says that the knife has the autoLAWKS and it actually doesn't, then technically you can return it (have them pay for your shipping if online) since what they described about the knife is false. That is unless you prefer the LAWKS over the autoLAWKS.

These are my first CRKT knives, so I don't know which I prefer. But yeah, LA police gear isn't saying they're autoLAWKS. I just assumed they were the same knife as on the website. Oh well. It was $40.

Hey question, it says not to carry tip up in pants pockets. What problem is there with it. How would someone get hurt?

Thanks for the help. I'm too poor to collect guns and I love knives, I hope I can learn more here.

Yeah, i saw that CRKT cautions users from carrying tip-up despite having holes that can allow the knife to be carried tip-up. I think their reason is so that the blade doesnt accidentally protrude out and poke or slash the user while he/she goes to grab the knife in the pocket. Personally, i dont think the blade can accidentally open since there is a ball bearing on the liner lock that keeps the blade closed, the same ball bearing that gives enough resistance for the user to flip open the knife via the index flipper. Hope this helps.

I set it up for tip up carry which allows the "carson flipper" to catch on the pocket and open on draw. I saw the same thing with a CS tri-lite.

welllll...the more you learn, the more you'll spend. and you'll learn a lot here. so maybe you should start collecting guns instead, before it's too late. :0)

CRKT keeps changing the specifications all the time. It is impossible to know if the knife you buy matches the information on the website at any particular moment.

With LAWKS versus AUTO-LAWKS it is easy, just look at the knife. But try finding out what steel a particular CRKT folder is made of - impossible. Especially if you mailorder some discount knives that may have been in storage for years.
