Lawn mower wheels as contact wheels?

This may be a whacky idea but has anyone tried 2"x8" lawn mower wheels as contact wheelt for a homemade grinder. They have solid rubber wheels that could be cleaned up nice and flat and have bearings in the hub. I realize they might not make the best wheels but they are cheap and might work for a small number of knives.-Guy T.

Guy; I saw a photo in Knives Ill. about two years ago of a maker using a rear wheel off of a shopping cart as a contact wheel.
It might be worth a try.
Let us know how it turns out.
Take care: Charles

The first grinder I ever made had a ball bearing mower wheel as the idler wheel, and a solid hud mower wheel for the drive wheel. It was a 2 X 48 unit, and I used it for the first two years I made knives. Nothing was precision, and getting a good grind was difficult, but it was what I could afford at the time!

Tried some better than average mower type wheels once they tend to vibrate to muchand seem to grow in size as rpm goes up.Pretty scary on a 3400 rpm moter.
Try grizzly they offer a 10 inch contact wheel for their grinder for 57$??
You pays your money and takes your choice

TJ, Ed and Charles, thanks for the replies, TJ you're right, that does sound pretty scary. I suppose the rubber is not as dense as I thought and I had my doubts about the tightness of the bearing assembly. A contact wheel and idler assembly from a supply house sounds like a good idea for a homemade grinder! Thanks again-Guy T.

Use the right tool for the right job.
I know a fellow who had a contact wheel come off his grinder at max speed. It chased him around the shop, a small garage, climbed the wall, traversed the ceiling, and chased him some more.

Safety first!
