I've got about 20 old lawnmower blades hanging in my shop, and was just curious what type of steel they are and if i could put them to good use ?

From what I have heard and experienced - those old lawn mower blades are probably 5160 or something pretty close.

I have used old lawn mower blades to make a couple of blades and a spear point.

You will need to aneal them, gring them to shape, heat to non-magnetic and quench in warm oil. Then temper at about 350 to 400 degrees. I started our using a couple of old lawn mower blades and then used leaf springs from the junk yard. Save yourself a lot of trouble and go buy some new 5160 from a local spring maker. You can find them in the Yellow Pages. New 5160 is cheap and sooooo much easier to work with.
