OK, apart from knife sharpening I,m really into gardening. Is it possible to sharpen a lawnmower blade with spyderco rods? I saw sal on the spyderco DVD sharpening an axe blade and wonder could this be replicated for grass cutting?

if the abrasive is harder than the blade, it will sharpen. it's been my experience that lawnmower blades are practically annealed, though probably just as-rolled.

Possible but it will take a lifetime.

Belt sander, file, coarse stone from Home Depot, coarse diamond. All better choices and will be many times more effective.

For mulching mower blades I use an angle grinder. I'm sure the Sharpmaker could sharpen a mower blade, but it would take a tremendous amount of time and effort.

Lawnmower blade steel isn't hardened. This is done for a reason so that they will bend or dent rather than snap or chip when hitting a hard object like a rock or tree stump. Over heating isn't a problem when grinding them. Therefore using any power tool to grind it down is no problem. I use a belt grinder, but you can use a bench grinder or angle grinder as well. Sharpening by hand is a pain, even with a file IMO.

I used to just use a bench or angle grinder. Now that I have been using a belt sander to sharpen knives I also use it on the lawnmower blades. A sharp blade makes a lot of difference especially for the first time or two mowing with it.

I think it's worth mentioning:

Make sure you take the wire off the plug when you are doing any type of work on a lawn mower, especially taking the blade on or off!

You would be there all day. :p

If you only had hand tools, a file would probably be the easiest start.

Wait for it...wait for it...
If your time is important to you try the paper wheels....30 seconds to polished hair whittling mirror edges!!!
Lol

If you've a Dremel tool, there's an attachment and guide for about $10.

And you don't even have to remove the blade.

But pull the plug on the plug.

So you could, but is it worth the effort. I sharpen my blade maybe 1x per year, and it cuts fine either way.

+1 for the bench grinder.

Lawn mower blades ain't for shvin', and they're hidden on the ground.

Just my .02
