I got this LB5 from a co-worker to sharpen. He said he might be willing to sell it. I like it, Im not a big Schrade collector but I have a handful. I have never seen this model and wondered what you guys think. Any info you could give me about the knife or what would be a fair offer to the owner would be appreciated. He isnt a knife guy at all, I was sharpening it for him as a favor.

Also when Im sharpening it Im having trouble getting it real sharp. Right now it will cut paper and sort of shave hair with some tugging but it isnt up to what Im used to with 1095. Any tips for stainless sharpening or just the normal routine?

The bolster says 2399 what does that mean?
Thanks
Enjoy the pics.

Also what are the scales made of? They look to be very dark wood with a bit of red.

Bolsters had green corrosion but they are silver colored. What metal would that be?

Thanks again.

The 2399 is a serial number. The green corrosion on the nickel silver bolsters is verdegris from sitting in the leather sheath. Wood is probably cocobolo, and the stamp indicates this is probably an 80's issue. Newer ones had a script Uncle Henry in there too. Originally it may have come in a set with other lockbacks, the LB1 and LB3. They would have the matching serial numbers to this LB5. It's a nice knife. Does not look as if it has been used much.

I second the "out of a set" idea. Here's a link to a thread I started showcasing these sets. I'm pretty sure the handles are "Wondawood" (layers of resin impregnated wood) as on the regular LB7s, only darker. It just doesn't look like regular wood as far as grain pattern; you can see the layers. I've been wrong before though.

Thanks that a nice set you have. I had wondered if the slight recurve was supposed to be there or it had been sharpened improperly. Your pic shows it very well.
