I have a couple LB7 Schrade knives that won't lock up. I have had one for a coulple of years and just aquired another one recently. The both have the same problem, they will not lock when you open them without manually pushing the backspring against the blade, and then they won't stay locked. I assume this is an inherit problem of these knives. I restore knives and straight razors and have a shop setup that will let me do about any task. I thought before I disasemble it, I thought I would post this to see if anybody can share any information that might be helpfull. My expertise lies in straight razors, fixed blades, and conventional folding knives. I have never had one of these apart. I assume it is a spring since the backspring moves freely and won't lock. Also is there any place a person can get parts for these or will I have to make them.
Thank you in advance for any information you can provide, russhi

I've seen a post or two around here, from others who've had a similar issue with Schrade lockbacks like the LB7. You might look for the return spring inside the handle. If it's like most other lockbacks, there should be what looks like a thick piece of wire, wedged in under the lockbar, nearer to the rear end of the knife handle. One end of the spring is normally recessed into a notch in the 'spring holder', which is basically the spacer between the rear bolsters. The free end of the return spring rides against the inside of the locking bar; this is what normally keeps the lockbar engaged. I've seen a post or two, about the return springs coming out and being lost. That might explain why yours isn't staying locked up, if the spring is missing or broken.

I have no idea if replacement parts are available for these, assuming a missing return spring.

Here's a similar thread:

Here's another more detailed thread from another site ( http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=9909 ), with photo from that thread linked here. The photo of a disassembled knife shows the spring steel 'wire', wedged into the notch in the spring holder:

That is it David. The spring tension bar has failed.Youll have to pull the backspring and replace or sometimes if not broken, you can adjust the tension bar.It is a common problem with the Schrades. Some people use piano wire to replace it.
