Hi all
I'm curious does anyone know what the old manufacturer"s suggested retail price was for Scrimshaw LB7's, especially the hand painted ones like the first in flight?I don't mean collector value for a present knife but what they sold for before Schrade went under.

Thanks Codger. i recenty aquired a First in Flight, Breaking the Sound Barrier X-1 and Wings of Victory LB 7 Scrimshaw knives. These are a litte different in that they are hand painted while most scmshaw knives are just black outlined artwork. The Breaking heh Sound Barrer a a low numbered on it. I beleve 685. They are mint in the box. I still can't find the MSR price on them. I couldn't find them on the link you provided. From what I have read the First in Flight and Wings of Victory had a production run of 6000 while the Breaking the Sound Barrier was limited to 3000.

That was the pre-production projections, but not absolutely the number made. That only 1/2 as many of the last in the series was projected suggests that the sales of the first two was not as sucessful as they had hoped they would be. And that not all of the owners of the first two knives would be expected to lay out the $$$ to acquire the third to complete a set of three.

Going by what you have said Codger, since these are hand painted, I wonder if sales were lower than anticipated because maybe the cost to the customer was quite a bit higher than the other schrimshaws which were only drawn in black outline. As I said I have been unsuccessfull in finding anyting on maufacturer's suggested retail price.

If I had to guess, I would say that sales were subdued more to subject matter interest among collectors than because of a few dollars priceing increase. In those years there was a constant search for subject matter which would attract the most buyers, and little cost difference in production between the different subjects. The hand coloring only added one operation to production and may or may not have been farmed out.

Well
Anyway I'm glad I've got them, especially the Wings of Victory. It's a reminder of what was said about the mini series Band of Brothers. They were the greatest generation. I've always been interested in the history of aviation. It was a good X-mas present to myself. As always thanks for the insight Michael.
